“Dear PoPville,

I was recently talking with some friends in San Francisco about all these start ups that deliver food quickly and realized DC has a real shortage of food delivery options compared to other major cities. There are a few restaurants that deliver, and a few services that provide for multiple restaurants but the selections are limited and always changing.

Could you ask the community, what do they recommend for the best restaurant delivery? Are there particular restaurants or apps that they’ve found reliable for delivery inside DC?”

ubereats

From an email:

“Starting this Tuesday (8/25), Uber users in downtown DC can order lunch in 10 minutes or less from a curated menu through the Uber app. Skip the line at Bub & Pops or indulge in DGS right from your desk. Using the app, order local favorites Monday – Friday from 11am to 2pm at the tap of a button. To celebrate our launch, we’re offering free delivery for the first week!

HOW IT WORKS

It’s as easy as requesting a ride:

Open the Uber app and tap the EATS icon at the top menu bar (only visible when you’re in the coverage area)

Enter your address or move the pin to your location and tap VIEW MENU

Select the number of meals, tap PLACE ORDER, and your driver will be curbside in minutes

Very good news for Brightwood and north country. Thanks to a reader for sending the news about Salt and Pepper Grill III. Despite pleas to the neighborhood, Chocolate Crust closed (just south of Walmart) at the end of October. Salt and Pepper Grill II opened up a year ago at 14th and Shepherd St, NW. The original Salt and Pepper Grill is located at 2632 Georgia Ave, NW in Pleasant Plains. You can see their menu here.

Ed. Note: I just had Salt and Pepper Grill II delivered on Friday and it was freaking delicious.

“Dear PoPville,

A couple people I know have been ordering food for delivery around the district and paying with a credit card. They have been adding a few extra dollars for the tip before the card is charged to not mess with having cash, adding more to the bill afterwards, etc. Then the delivery driver comes to your home and is looking for a tip, even though you already paid one. He will just say you didn’t pay a tip, you need to pay a tip, almost aggressively.

I thought this was ridiculous and petty when I first heard… until it happened to me. Twice.

I dont know what it is, but twice now I have ordered delivery, paid a tip beforehand, and then gotten the driver to almost heckle me to the point of tipping him. Now, I tip pretty well, and even if it is only a few dollars, why would you want to tip twice? Are these drivers hustling large number of people out of tips, and getting twice the amount?

I would assume much of this happens last at night when people are more inebriated and most likely forget they already paid a tip, or just say forget it and pay it anyway. But! I thought this was something to bring to your attention. I definitely want to hear if this has happened to other people, especially late at night and see if it is a growing hustle in DC. It just seemed to me, and the others who it had happened to, that the drivers knew they had gotten a tip and were so adamant about no tip, it almost seemed suspicious. Maybe I am over-thinking heavily, but wanted to know what you think.”

A couple years ago we spoke about the best pizza delivery options in DC. But for today I want to know what are your favorite non-pizza delivery options? Lately my favorite delivery is Greek Spot at 11th and U St, NW. Tons of restaurants have been opening up the last few years – any of them have a good delivery option? In addition to your overall favorite – what are the favorite fastest options too? And a brief side note – how much do you/should you tip the delivery guy?
