4th and K Street, NW

Kate sends around 12:45am: “first the race of cars up New York Ave and now gunshots and tons of cars outside on 4th and K”

Alyssa reports:

“Around 12:36am, we heard 6-7 gun shots sounded like it came from 4th and K St NW. We saw two young males run east on K St. We called 911. Then another young male flagged down a police van and the van followed him to in front of the building under construction at 4th and K St. 3-5 mins later a fire engine and two ambulances joined them in front of the construction.

Earlier tonight we watched a 10+ car pursuit of an armed carjacker who stole a gold Equinox on the same street.

Summer 2020 in DC. And so it begins.”

James reports to us at 6:30am: “It appears that wmata headquarters is on fire.”

DCFD reported at 6:25am: “Working Fire 600 5th St NW. fire showing from top floor of Metro headquarters.”

From WMATA:

“We are grateful all employees and occupants were safely evacuated during this morning’s fire at Metro’s headquarters, the Jackson Graham Building in Downtown, DC. Thanks to the quick response from DC Firefighters, the fire was quickly contained, and there were no reported injuries to Metro employees or first responders. We are currently assessing the damage and working closely with DCFEMS to identify the cause of the fire.

Metro is currently constructing a new headquarters in DC to replace the Jackson Graham Building, which has not undergone a major renovation since its construction and does not meet today’s fire & life safety standards for new buildings. As noted in our public presentations, fire/life safety factors were primary considerations in our decision to move.”

“Dear PoPville,

The man friend and I got to talking about what a post-covid world would look like as DC slowly reopens. I’m immuno-suppressed so we won’t be going out in this capacity any time soon, but assuming the restaurant/bar scenes will never recover or operate as they had in the past we got to discussing how some of them could adapt and survive/thrive.

We saw a few articles discussing how some restaurants plan to use mannequins and fake dolls to fill empty space, but how creepy is that and what a waste of space! I’d like to know what Popville thinks about the return of the “dinner theater” experience! Knowing tables will need to be spaced out for diners and concerts/art performances aren’t happening any time soon, wouldn’t a better use of the space be dining and listening to an entertainer (small band, two-person play, violinist, etc.) Surely there is no shortage of artists and talent in DC! “Dear PoPville,

Just wondering if anyone knew what these Scientology volunteers are doing? I’ve seen them at Mezcalero and El Tamarindo. At first, I thought they were public health officials given their outfits.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I went for a socially distant walk alone on Saturday afternoon. Between my keys, phone, hand sanitizer, and other accruement that I had in my pocket, my card holder fell out of my pocket somewhere along my walk. It was a long walk and I’m not sure where it fell out. However, when I returned home, my wallet was propped up on the doorknob to my apartment. Some Good Samaritan had found it and delivered it back to me, (more…)
