“Dear PoPville,

As a DCPS teacher (who would prefer to stay anonymous) I wanted to send this because, while most of the DCPS reopening focus has been on the health and safety factors of reopening (understandably so), very little discussion has been had on how logistically terrible the plan is for students, families, and teachers.

As an example, I am a fifth grade math teacher in a school with 50 5th graders. 10 of our Students will be back in school, and will be taught by either myself or the 5th grade ELA teacher. This means that the remaining 40 students would no longer have access to the teacher they have spent the last two months learning routines, skills and structures from. DCPS has offered no further clarity on who would take on that teaching role, but I don’t think it’s out of turn to say that they wouldn’t not be as effective working with the group as I would be. Update: From an email, “Some information in regards to the rebranding of Silo. We are changing the concept to a Bavarian Food Hall called Prost DC. I’ve attached our menus and we are planning on opening next Thursday 10/22.” Check out the menu ProstDCMenu (PDF)

Thanks to Laetitia-Laure and other for sending photos of the current signage at Silo:

“do you know anything about Silo? Rebranding (pivoting lol)? New ownership? Excited for Oktoberfest?” (more…)

540 Penn Street, NE via Coconut Club

From Coconut Club:

“Hey friends, Chef Adam and Emily here with some unfortunate news.

Due to circumstances outside of our control, this Sunday, October 18th will be our last service until further notice. Our plans are to close for fall and winter, with reopening plans for 2021. We hope this isn’t goodbye forever and we can come back to vacation with you soon.

This past year, we have fought long and hard to stay positive, innovative, and keep the good vibes going for you all. Coconut Club has always been more than just our cool concept, it’s our community. We would be nothing without our team, our guests, our Coconut Club Crew. We want to give a huge thank you to everyone past and present who has helped us along the way. The memories of you all in this place will live on long after this is all over.

That being said, let’s make this last week a good one. Come get your cocktails and bites to go, or on the patio. We will also have a market of merchandise, wine & beer so don’t miss out on that either.

Thursday 5:00pm-9:30pm
Friday – Saturday 5:00pm-10:00pm
& Sunday 12:00-5:00pm

Stop by and support if you can, we’d love to see you. If you’d like to support our team, we have set up a GoFundMe to give you the opportunity to say thank you. 100% of donations will go to staff directly. Thank you all for your patronage over the 1.5 years – we couldn’t have done it without all of you. We can’t wait to come back and give you all that needed vacation from the world.

With love and gratitude,
Adam, Emily & the Coconut Club team”

Thanks to a reader for passing on this GoFundMe:

“Unfortunately, we are closing for the Fall + Winter seasons, and we wanted to give our regulars, friends, and families the opportunity to say “thank you” one last time to our staff. (more…)

Open daily 8am-3pm

Thanks to Cate for sending:

“SakuSaku Flakerie, a local, women-owned business is operating out of Al Volo in Cleveland Park (3417 Connecticut Ave, NW.) Their food is legitimately amazing and they have the old Firehook back patio for hanging out with your coffee. I’d love for them to stay and become a staple of the neighborhood and would love to get people out and supporting them.” (more…)

Ed. Note: If the event is to be held on Federal Land like the above from September then the permit is issued by the National Parks Service not the Mayor.
