“Dear PoPville,

I love walking around the city as my primary form of exercise these days. I am seeing a LOT of businesses still boarded up even though they are open. Given the conjecture that we are likely past the point of destructive behavior related to the election, and hoping that we don’t have more unrest, does anyone know if there are ANY mandates around restoring business and storefronts to BAU (Business as usual)? It looks horrible and is definitely not what we need as we go into the holiday season.

Last week we learned that “Smoke and Barrel is desperately trying to cling to life.” Today they share on their Facebook:

“To our supporters, staff, family and greater DC,

2020 has truly been a year like no other. Since this pandemic took hold of life as we know it, all of us here at Smoke & Barrel have fought to continue serving great BBQ to our community as well as doing everything possible to preserve our livelihood. We are truly grateful for all the support we have received from you all and it has definitely helped keep us in the fight up to this point. Sadly, we have come to the realization that with the pandemic back on the rise and such limitations on dine-in service and our need to survive almost purely on carry-out and delivery, we cannot survive the winter with our existing format. Therefore, we have made the painful decision not to re-open after the the Thanksgiving break but instead work towards finding a more functional and financially viable way to move forward.

I want to personally thank all our staff for risking their health by coming in week after week during such challenging times all in an effort to keep Smoke & Barrel alive. Without them we could not have made it this long. I truly appreciate everything they have done and I hope we can all come back together in the near future as we work to find a way to navigate such uncertain times. Thank you.

-John Andrade, principal”

Ed. Note: Last week we shared their letter stating that despite new Phase Two restrictions they had “made the decision to stay open.”

Thanks to all who passed on the latest letter from [solidcore]:

“To our valued DC [community],

Effective tomorrow, November 28th, we regret that we will be temporarily closing our DC studios. Unfortunately, we have not yet been able to get clarification on DC’s new “Phase Two” Restrictions allowing gyms, restaurants and bars to remain open, but requiring fitness classes to shut down.

We maintain that we should be able to operate in the same phase as traditional gyms, given that we have adhered to the exact same mandates as our counterparts. While we are disappointed, we remain committed to advocating for our industry and demonstrating our ability to keep our [community] safe. (more…)

C_brescia asked yesterday: “Are some/many people experiencing delays in getting back their COVID-19 testing results?”

Most early replies tend to be between 2-5 days.

Amanda (and others) recommend: “Make an account on labcorp…you get the results as soon as they come in, rather than waiting for them to report to dc health, then dc health reporting it to you.”

Though Phil notes: “I did that, and it’s hit-or-miss in terms of timing. LabCorp doesn’t always beat DC Health by that much, if at all.”

Thanks to all who passed on the letter from [solidcore]:

“To our valued DC [community],

As you know, we’ve adhered to local regulations and increased safety protocols since we re-opened our studios in June. We are proud that over the last six months of operating in studios all over the country, we haven’t had a single documented instance of COVID community spread within our spaces. Your safety always has been and continues to be our number one priority.

With the new Phase Two restrictions announced by Mayor Bowser, which allow traditional gyms to stay open, but require group classes to close, we have made the decision to stay open. We continue to adhere with all Phase Two safety measures such as capacity restrictions, mask requirements, and physical distancing. (more…)

Thanks to Emily for passing on from Bon Matcha:

“After careful thought and consideration, we regret to say that Bôn Matcha will open its I St windows for the last time on December 13, 2020. For the past three years it has been our great joy and privilege to celebrate our heritage as Asian Americans with all of you. Thank you for letting us be a part of your routines for self-care, your weekend treats, and your midday breaks. Though we close our windows for now, we confess that we don’t believe this is goodbye, but rather, until next time. We have been blessed to be a part of your stories, and we promise that we have many more we’d like to tell. We eagerly look forward to the new hope and opportunity that tomorrow brings and hope to see you soon.” (more…)

They’ve got great BBQ and they’re really nice there, so if there was ever a time to share the love it’d be now.”

Their website says:

“Smoke & Barrel is a neighborhood gathering spot and BBQ joint, or at least it was before Covid took over all our lives. While we continue to serve delicious BBQ for carry-out and delivery, our dine-in business, like so many other neighborhood restaurants, has all but disappeared…understandably.

As the principal owner of Smoke & Barrel, I am reaching out to you all with a plea for your continued support. We do not have the ability to have any kind of reasonable patio space so we rely entirely on our carry-out and delivery but we are on the verge of suffering the same fate as many of our restaurant peers who have recently closed permanently.
