“Dear PoPville,

“Dear PoPville,

Is Sushi Para permanently closed here in Van Ness?”

Welp, it’s not looking good. A call to the restaurant rings and rings without going to voicemail. Yelp and google list them as permanently closed:

And their website linked from their DC Facebook only lists two locations in Chicago.

Sushi Para opened in Van Ness back in January 2012 and put lots and lots of sushi in our bellies. If permanent as it seems they will indeed be missed.

Now bring back Taco Bell you cowards!!

“Dear PoPville,

For many years before 2020 my DC-based small retail business happily obliged requests from parents of local school children to make donations to their school/PTO auctions and fundraisers. The support of our neighbors helped make our business sustainable.

I recently received a donation request from the parent of a well-resourced Capitol Hill neighborhood public school and I want to let readers know that such requests are probably really tough to accommodate right now for businesses that have managed to hang on into this year.

It pains me to say I can’t help but it’s also really uncomfortable for me to have to explain the reasons why. (more…)

Thanks to David for sending. Madame Tussauds website still lists the D.C. location as “TEMPORARILY CLOSED”:

“In an abundance of caution, Madame Tussauds Washington, D.C. will temporarily close effective Wednesday, March 18. We will remain in contact with the authorities on when we should re-open. If you have purchased tickets for the dates when we will be closed, you may use these tickets for any future date through December 31, 2020.”

Their Facebook was last active January 21st (nobody could resist the Bernie mittens meme!) (more…)

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser and DC Health, led by Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, announced that beginning on Thursday, February 18, individuals who work in four categories will become eligible to book vaccination appointments through vaccinate.dc.gov or by calling the District’s coronavirus Call Center: individuals who work in a grocery store setting, health and human services and social services outreach workers, individuals who work in manufacturing, and individuals who work in food packaging (e.g. persons who work at Food & Friends and other similar facilities). “Dear PoPville,

I was hoping for suggestions on good boxed lunch/brunch options that would travel well for a socially distant picnic (I.e. food that won’t get cold/soggy in transit). I’m sure there are more options these days with pandemic protocol, so I’d love to hear some more places offering this type of to-go meal!”

THIS MARCH MADNESS: PLACE YOUR BETS ON DC

It goes without saying that this damn virus has impacted a huge number of businesses in DC. I’ve lost track of the bars and restaurants that have closed, and the friends who have watched their dreams disappear. We say it over and over again, but even in the best of times, our margins are incredibly narrow. The grants and aid packages have been very helpful, but as a friend says, we’re not running P & Ls we’re running L & Ls. Also, don’t forget congress gave us territorial aid, not state aid. We still need help.

Last year, DC legalized sports betting for wagering on games through apps and in-person. I’m too emotionally involved in my teams to bet. My big gamble was getting involved in the hospitality business. Someday, I’ll let you know if that bet paid off. I’m just a bartender, so it may be above my paygrade, but I’m hoping (almost begging) that some of the tax revenue raised on betting in DC can be used to help my industry. (more…)
