Local rising kindergartener, Phin, has advanced to the Top 5 in his group in the national Jr. Ranger Contest, a competition that celebrates children who are passionate about nature, wildlife, and exploration. After making it through earlier rounds with strong family and friend support, Phin is now in 4th place and working toward the top spot needed to move on to the quarterfinals.
The contest encourages kids to engage with the outdoors and highlights their curiosity and love for learning about the natural world. For Phin and his family, this experience has been both exciting and meaningful, made even more special by the encouragement from friends, neighbors, and the broader community.

On Monday we posted about the “Crisis of the Throne bathrooms”.
Yesterday City Administrator Kevin Donahue waded into and weighed in on the crisis:
“Although we found funding to keep the Thrones pilot program running until Sept 30, the Council plans to pay for the public toilets program next year by **terminating** 60 DC Department of Public Works employees who are working on keeping our streets and sidewalks clean.”

“The Metropolitan Police Department has identified a suspect in the fatal shooting that occurred early Saturday in the 1000 block of 14th Street, Southeast. The reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect has been increased thanks to contributions from our partners at the FBI Washington Field Office and U.S. Marshals Service.
On Saturday, July 5, 2025, at approximately 3:03 a.m., First District officers responded to the report of a shooting in the 1000 block of 14th Street, Southeast. Officers located a 3-year-old girl suffering a gunshot wound to the upper body. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and transported the girl to an area hospital, where she received treatment for critical injuries.
The preliminary investigation revealed that at least one suspect began discharging a firearm in the block, striking a parked vehicle where the girl was seated alongside family members.
On Monday, July 7, 2025, the victim succumbed to her injuries. The victim has been identified as 3-year-old Honesty Cheadle, of Southeast, DC. (more…)

“Animal Outlook, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to exposing cruelty in animal agriculture and promoting transparency for consumers, has achieved a significant victory in its lawsuit against Harvey’s Market. The case, filed in the District of Columbia Superior Court, challenged Harvey’s Market’s alleged deceptive advertising practices related to foie gras. As part of the settlement reached on June 26, 2025, the nearly 100-year-old butcher has agreed to permanently cease the sale of foie gras. (more…)
