“Dear PoPville,

I was wondering if you could do a post asking for readers’ best advice on moving in the DC area and any tips they have for a first time home buyer. Just went under contract for a condo in Columbia Heights (more like Pleasant Plains) and would love any advice related to movers, the neighborhood, or anything else related to homeownership!”

Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

What are rat abatement/prevention techniques people have used in the past? I live in a condo building and our trash bins are outside. They are the standard green and blue trash bins, and the rats eat right through them like it’s wet paper. The rats skip the black poison boxes, because, as one pest control guy told me, “Why eat the poison when you can just eat real human food?” I looked into getting large metal trash containers from a company (the type you might see at a state or national park) but they are very expensive and if the lid is left even a little open… the rats get in. We had the company with the rat-killing terriers come by and assess the property… and a few nights of having the dogs come would cost $10,000 or so. Crazy expensive for our condo association. Downtown

“Dear PoPville,

I live in SE DC and I lost my two rings on New Years Eve. A block away from the White House. These rings have an immense sentimental value, the wedding band (going on our 3 year anniversary in two months) and my emerald ring which is a gift from my mother, I received it since I was 8 years old. I know the chances of finding them are very slim but I’m holding on to a miracle. Thank you!”

Ed. Note: If there is a miracle in the making please email [email protected] so I can put you in touch with OP.

Event

To celebrate DC native Haili Blassingame’s debut novel, THEY ALL FALL IN LOVE AT THE END, Lost City Books is throwing a launch party themed around messy love stories. Haili, and a crew of writers she has assembled, will read excerpts from their work, but there will also be audience participation in the form of anonymously submitting messy dating stories. It’s going to be a night of laughter, of gasps, of books, of great company. Refreshments will be available. We can’t wait to see you there!

Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

Here’s an old mystery for a new year. I’ve lived in what is technically “university heights” for 7+ years, and walk down the hill to Petworth regularly. And frequently, but without discernible regularity, there is a smashed coconut on the intersection of Harewood and Rock Creek Church Road. Just in front of the cemetery gate but in the road. Just one coconut. And usually not a whole one. (more…)

Truxton Circle

via google maps

Brian reports from around 3rd and P Street, NW:

“any word on a shooting in Truxton Circle last night at about 8:30? Sounded like three shots. Police were in the area minutes later”

Amy replied: “There were some leftover NYE fireworks getting set off in the neighborhood last night…”

Anyone else hear them in Truxton?

Unrelated but just before 6pm Mona reported to us in NE:

“So, uh, did anyone else hear two massive (like, ground-shaking massive) explosions around NE DC within a few minutes of each other just now or am I having a stroke?”

Somebody’s definitely gonna bring up the shirt so let me get that out of the way.
