What the Helen of Troy is This

Thanks to a reader for sending the scene above from Shaw. Our June fireworks bonanza continued to the joy of some and the chagrin of many others last night. Conspiracies abound though as I’ve said before, D.C. is no stranger to earlier fireworks displays – however this year’s displays seem to be much louder than previous years. Also of note, these displays are not limited to one neighborhood or area but have been reported all over the District from Shaw to H Street to Tenleytown to SW and beyond. Etegamist passes an interesting theory: (more…)

Protest

Thanks to @jessfainberg for sharing the above video last night of Albert Pike being toppled from 3rd and D Street, NW.

AP reported:

“The statue, dedicated in 1901, was located in Judiciary Square about half a mile from the U.S. Capitol. It was built at the request of Masons who successfully lobbied Congress to grant them land for the statue as long as Pike would be depicted in civilian, not military, clothing.” (more…)

Library

From DCPL:

“Starting June 29, DC Library locations will begin expanding service on weekdays as part of Phase Two. In addition to current services including picking up and returning library materials, customers will soon be allowed to enter buildings to pick up books, remote printing and use a limited number of public computers and printers.

To ensure public health and safety of library staff and users, controlled entry will be in place to limit the number of people in the library at one time. Customers must wear a face mask or covering and practice social distancing when visiting the Library. Browsing for books and meeting room reservations are not part of the Phase Two reopening. Reading rooms and outdoor terraces remain closed to the public.

Starting Monday, June 29, the following locations will be open with expanded services from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. (more…)

Megot is a gentleman among kitties. He is a purrball who will do anything for a tummy rub. This big boy is quiet and a little shy, but once he opens up, he will be your new best friend. He spends most of his day sleeping among the blankets on the bed or out following his human around the house. He will always welcome a good tummy rub, but beware if you start, you’ll find yourself rubbing the tummy for much longer than anticipated! What more can we say? His purrs say it all! For more information about Megot, please email [email protected]

Nancy came to Lost Dog Rescue from Albany, Georgia and is now looking for her forever home! She is fairly mellow for a younger dog — happy to hang out, play with chew toys for hours, give lots of kisses and cuddle.

She does get a bit excited when greeting people, so we think she would do best in a home with older kids with some dog experience. Nancy is pretty easy to walk on a leash, has been crate-trained while in foster care and has good house manners. There is a cat in her foster home, but the two have only seen each other briefly in passing.

Nancy had recently had puppies and is nearing the end of her heartworm treatment, so she’s been mostly resting and recuperating during her foster home stay. But it just means that she is a great buddy for staying home and taking it easy. For more information about Nancy, email [email protected].
