From a press release:

“We might think of March as springtime, but the D.C. area is expecting snow on Friday and many will be without heat during the chilly nights to come.

Every winter, 1 in 5 residents – our neighbors, friends, and co-workers – are often forced to choose between putting food on the table, paying for rent, getting medication or heating their homes in the wintertime. More often than not, these residents and their children choose to give up heat to afford other necessities.

To give commuters a ‘taste’ of how cold it can be in a home with no heat, Washington Area Fuel Fund (WAFF) will distribute free popsicles outside the Rosslyn and Dupont metro stops this Friday, March 4 from 7-9 a.m. to demonstrate the connection between icy cold frozen treats and temperatures inside local homes of families in need. The full details are the advisory below.

WHEN: Friday, March 4

7 – 9 a.m.

WHERE: Rosslyn Metro
1817 N Moore St.
Arlington, VA 22209

Dupont Metro
South Exit
19th St. NW (1300 block)”

First Natalie Portman and now Julia Louis-Dreyfus – it’s been a very good week…

A reader reported yesterday just after 5pm:

“Asked a lady and said they were lining up to be extras on the HBO show “Veep”. I dunno…kinda cool.”

Definitely cool!! And Julia Louis-Dreyfus instagrams her old stomping grounds in Spring Valley.

And this is the house I grew up in. #Veep #worldscolliding @thesamrichardson

Located right next door to Thaiphoon on S Street, NW in Dupont. Back in the day we learned it is now part of Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse and: “It was built as a store in 1877, making it one of the oldest remaining buildings in the neighborhood. It certainly is an unusual facade.”

Thank you all for indulging in my recent obsession of birds, yesterday’s will be tough to beat but today we’ll focus on an unusual situation in Petworth. In the building above the YES! Organic Market on Georgia Ave – apparently there are either a ton of birds or someone who’s playing a really loud recording of a ton of birds. A reader captures the scene a bit (though I’m told the video doesn’t do justice to how loud these birds sound):

“This was filmed on Taylor St, a block off of Georgia. My neighbor said she’s emailed the management company for the building that Yes is in, but hasn’t received a response.

What on earth is up with the loud recording of bird noises on Georgia by Yes? This has been going on for days, only at night.”

Video after the jump. (more…)

Been a while since someone has asked about this one. We’ve previously been told that this is a ventilation shaft for metro the highway tunnel. The artist responsible for the mural, Val E. Lewton, passed away in May.

Also lots of talk on twitter last night about loud bangs heard in NE:

“alright, NE DC — what were those two huge booms a moment ago?”

“if i had to guesstimate, i’d pin them near NOMA. ~5th or 6th & florida NE.”

“k glad I’m not crazy. Heard them too @ 7th & K”

“I was on 9&H and saw light for the 2nd boom & think fireworks. It looked like 10&H near the alley.”

“sure didn’t sound like fireworks!”

“@PoPville two more loud bangs shaking my windows at 7 and H NE”

“two more bright flashes & loud pops right by 8th & I”

Consensus: Fireworks.

“But…whyyyyyyy? It is November. And 11:30PM. And November.”

“pre-new years? No idea.”

925 Rhode Island Ave, NW

“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering if anyone can explain why the defunct Shaw Junior High (Garnet-patterson) building recently received a pretty good sized (and very loud) diesel generator? The school has been closed for years. Maybe it’s pumping power into the grid at a weak spot, but I’m certainly not an electric grid expert. (Frankly, I don’t even know if grids have weak spots) I have no idea why it’s there and I’m not sure anyone else is as curious as me.

Sincerely,
Curious Shaw dog park enthusiast”
