From WMATA:

“This weekend, Metro’s escalator contractor will install major components of the first new entrance escalator at Bethesda Station.

Bethesda’s entrance escalators are the second longest in the Western Hemisphere. Throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday, large gantries will move and position nine large sections of escalator truss. In addition, two motors, each the size of a small car, will also be moved into the escalator pit and will replace the outdated six-motor configuration that powered the original escalator. Control systems and other equipment also will be delivered this weekend.

To support this work, on Saturday, February 21 and Sunday, February 22, Bethesda Station will be temporarily closed so that construction crews can safely install, align and mechanically fasten the escalator truss sections. For safety reasons, the work, which will take nearly 52 consecutive hours, cannot take place with customers nearby. (more…)

Under the severe snow plan:

• Buses run only major arterial roadways.
• Some pre-established detours will be in effect.
• Where service does operate, expect delays and possible unexpected detours due to road conditions.

Riders can check which routes are operating by visiting this page.

“Dear PoPville,

Just an FYI – there are a bunch of proposed bus cuts if local jurisdictions don’t step up to pay Metro’s full funding cost. I feel like the bus cuts are being overshadowed by potential changes to rail.

People can come to the Board meeting at 1pm Thursday (unlikely) [600 5th Street NW] or fill out the online form by noon Wednesday.”

From NBC Washington:

“News4 has now learned the entire system — 39 miles of planned track — is in jeopardy.

Council sources said one proposal would complete the planned line from H Street NE to Georgetown and a second line to Anacostia. Little other development is expected.”

So let’s play the guessing game – when will the streetcar pick up passengers on H Street and Benning? Do you think it will ever be expanded? All the way to Georgetown like suggested in the story above? If plans for a Georgia Avenue line are scrapped, will that hurt it’s redevelopment (especially in the areas north of the Petworth metro)? Do you even care about the streetcar anymore?

Ed. Note: This week’s caption contest photo was picked before this most recent news.
