“Dear PoPville,

Do you know if anyone else has had issues with fare purchased online loading onto Smartrips? I purchased fare on January 15, followed the instructions re the waiting period and nothing happened. I reached out to WMATA customer service who essentially said “just keep tapping until it shows up.” I load it from my benefits card which runs from the 15th to the 14th so I can’t load more money from my benefits card yet. I wanted to know if anyone else had similar issues! Oh, and I ride the bus which has different waiting periods.”

Ed. Note: OP is NOT a fed affected by the shutdown.

“Dear PoPville,

are you getting emails from people about issues with Capital Bikeshare this morning? I just got an email that my bike wasn’t docked. I was able to run out and find what I think was the bike I docked (it had a rip on the seat so I found one in the same place/same rip) and it was locked but I moved it to a new station just to be safe. when I checked, the system still said I had the bike undocked from this morning. I then called the contact number and got a message saying they are having issues with some of their stations.

Curious if you are hearing this from others.”

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking down Connecticut this morning when I heard a large explosion sound coming from the intersection at Columbia Rd. I turned to see the driver of a 43 bus getting off the bus to examine the bus. Thankfully, another 43 pulled up moments later, and all of the passengers from the first bus offloaded and boarded the much coveted 43.”

The petition says:

“Metro promised the region that late night service would return on July 1, 2019. Now they’re trying to backtrack on that promise.

The Metro Board may soon vote on whether to break the promise and kill Metro’s late night rail service. Washington, DC needs a Metro system that meets the needs of our residents, our workers and our businesses. That means we need a Metro that stays open as late as our region does. Sign the #KeepMetroOpen petition to let the Metro board know that you agree with Mayor Bowser: we are a world-class city that deserves a world-class Metro.”

Ed. Note: Reduced hours went into effect June 25th 2017.

Ed. Note: The 13th Street replacement project was completed in 2017.

From WMATA:

“Since July 2018 the U St Escalator Replacement Project has been underway, replacing both east entrance escalators. Today marks the completion of these units and the replacement of all four entrance escalators at this station. Welcome back.”

A couple jumps into the rear doors of the Circulator bus as the doors closes… they didn’t quite make it.

Ed. Note: I will never not use this photo when we speak about the Circulator. Also, sweet.

From the Mayor’s Office on Friday:

“Today, as part of her #FairShotFebruary campaign, Mayor Bowser announced that all rides on the DC Circulator will be free from January 28, 2019 until February 28, 2019. The DC Circulator provides public transportation to many of the District’s main attractions and connects residents and visitors to business, culture, and entertainment corridors. (more…)

UPDATE: Official response from the Office of Unified Communications:

“Our preliminary findings show that this incident was handled and dispatched expeditiously. DC 911 received 12 calls for this incident at virtually the same time (to the minute). The first call, received at 2:42 p.m., was answered within 12 seconds, and was sent to dispatch in less than a minute. The first DCFEMS unit was on the scene within 3 minutes and 56 seconds of the initial 911 call. The spike in call volume did in fact cause some callers to put in queue (on hold). However, no one was on hold as long as it has been claimed. Instead, most calls that came in were put in queue for a little over one minute. There was one call that held for 3 minutes, and by the time it was answered the responders had already been dispatched. Our call takers are trained and prepared to accommodate and manage all calls despite the sudden change in call volume we experience from time to time when a highly visible incident such as this occurs.”

Whoa. Chase reports:

“On First between U and V NW.

The word is that a guy, his current gf and his ex got into an altercation and started chasing each other in their car. Didn’t sound like anyone was hurt.”

Russell W. Warnick also reported just after 3pm: (more…)
