“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will host two virtual public meetings to present an overview of the Connecticut Avenue NW Reversible Lane Safety and Operations Study including the technical analysis and preliminary concept designs. The virtual meetings will be held on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 and Thursday, April 1, 2021; the same information will be presented during both meetings.

The Connecticut Avenue NW Reversible Lane Safety and Operations Study assesses the multimodal (vehicular, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian) operational and safety impacts associated with removing or maintaining/improving the existing reversible lane system and improving multimodal accessibility (e.g., consideration of adding protected bicycle lanes). The project area is 2.7 miles long with the primary area from Connecticut Avenue at Legation Street NW to Calvert Street NW. The secondary project area is bordered by Wisconsin Avenue to the west, Broad Branch Road to the east, Dupont Circle to the south, and Western Avenue to the north.

“Metro expects to avert service cuts and layoffs that had been proposed in its FY22 budget thanks to new federal relief approved by Congress.

“Congress has once again stepped up to address the needs of Metro and the regional transit systems that will be critical to our region’s economic recovery,” said Metro Board of Directors Chair Paul C. Smedberg. “While it will take more time to work out all the details, including Metro’s exact share of this funding, the $1.4 billion provided by the American Recovery Plan for our region’s transit agencies will allow us to avert the painful service reductions and layoffs that were on the table.”

Smedberg continued, “More than 18,000 individuals have provided Metro’s Board of Directors with feedback on our FY22 budget, and that feedback is enormously helpful as we plan for the future. We will continue the public comment period – including virtual public hearings – through March 16, and we expect to vote on a revised FY22 budget in April that takes into consideration this new federal relief.”

Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld said, “This relief is only possible thanks to the leadership of our entire congressional delegation, who fought tirelessly for transit workers and riders.”

“Arguably, the best spot to watch planes land and takeoff in the United States is right across the Potomac river, north of the National Airport, and right off the Mount Vernon Trail. Referred to as Gravelly Point, the area was where Captain John Alexander (City of Alexandria’s namesake) had built his home called Abingdon in 1746, and where later George Washington’s beloved granddaughter, Eleanor “Nelly” Parke Custis was born. Pack a picnic, lean back, and watch the planes pass just a hundred feet above.”

North Capitol between M St and Pierce St NE

Update: “MPD reports the following roads are closed until further notice due to a vehicle crash.

-1100 block of North Capitol Street NE, between L Street and M Street NE.
– Unit block of M Street NE, between 1st Street NW and North Capitol Street NE.

Watch for MPD directions and please use an alternate route.”

A reader reports: “Just happened a few moments ago. They don’t appear to be trying to extract anyone. Traffic delays building. There does appear to be a guy sitting on the sidewalk so he might have been the driver. All traffic is being routed down M or Pierce. North Cap is shutdown for that block.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

That stretch is so scary for pedestrians/cyclists (and even as a motorist when crossing Michigan). Cars come really flying down that hill. And the metro station and Turkey Thicket are right there, so lots of folks on foot. They need to do some real rethinking that road to make it safe.”

Update from MPD:

“Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a traffic fatality resulting from a traffic crash that occurred on Monday, March 1, 2021, at the intersection of 10th Street and Michigan Avenue, Northeast.
