A reader reports around 9:15am this morning:

“Car accident near Howard Barnes & Noble. Walked past a bit late and first responders were on the scene. Looks like a metrobus may have been involved because it was also stopped with flashers on. Nearly witnessed another accident when some idiot in an SUV started honking and went in to head on traffic to get around the bus!”

From WMATA:

“The public comment period for Metro’s Fiscal Year 2022 budget is officially open, and Metro’s Board of Directors wants your feedback. Metro is encouraging anyone impacted by changes in this budget to make their voice heard before the comment period ends at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16.

Metro is facing a significant budget shortfall due to a decrease in ridership caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, with ridership down about 90 percent and 60 percent on Metrorail and Metrobus, respectively. Federal relief funding has allowed Metro to avoid layoffs, continue providing essential travel service, and prepare for transit ridership to return. However, even with the additional federal funding and management actions such as limiting the use of contractors and shrinking Metro’s workforce by attrition, there is not enough money to fill the entire budget gap for the fiscal year that begins July 1, 2021. Thanks to Shellie for sending Monday morning: “At DCA this morning at 8:15 AM – no flights on the boards out of the dreaded 35X gate

When we last spoke about 35x in November we learned:

“American Airlines continues to operate several flights a day using Gate 35X. Once the new concourse, which is currently under construction, opens next year, then flights will stop operating from Gate 35X.”

Washingtonian reported, via Airline Weekly:

“The Fort Worth, Texas-based Oneworld alliance carrier could begin flights from a new 14-gate concourse as early as April 20, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) President and CEO Jack Potter said at a board meeting Wednesday. The April opening — three months earlier than planned — is possible following an acceleration of construction work due to the decrease in air traffic during the pandemic.”

Here’s the latest official word from DCA on

“A new 14-gate concourse will replace busing operations from Gate 35X, increasing passenger comfort and convenience

From WMATA:

“Metro escalators are the link that brings customers in and out of stations every day, and a new contract to replace 130 escalators will continue an aggressive, decade-long program to replace and restore the oldest and least reliable escalators in the system. The $179 million, seven-year contract, awarded to KONE, includes the installation of heavy duty, transit grade escalators at 32 stations beginning in May 2021. The new escalators will incorporate the latest safety features, including LED lighting. (more…)

From DDOT:

“Today, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announced plans to install on-bus automated enforcement cameras on two DC Circulator buses to gather data about how DC’s Car Free Lanes are being used. The pilot is scheduled to begin on February 16, 2021 and will continue through April 15, 2021.

“Under Mayor Bowser’s leadership, DDOT continues to prioritize improving the reliability and efficiency of bus travel in the District through the Car Free Lanes,” said Interim DDOT Director Everett Lott. “The data we collect through this pilot will be used to evaluate how we can make our current and future Car Free Lanes safer and operate more efficiently.” (more…)

M Street, NW between Connecticut and 19th Street, NW

Back in October we noted an “extended sidewalk” was coming to M Street. I’ve never seen one with a running/walking lane before. Awesome.

“Dear PoPville,

Hoping someone might have some ideas….

There has been a strange plane flying circles over NW DC/Bethesda down to 395 & back for the last 20 minutes or so, I’ve been watching it on Flight Rader & it’s stayed between 5,000-5,300 ft.

It’s passed within hearing distance of me about 6 times.

In any event, since it’s in restricted airspace & I don’t see/hear any fighter jets chasing it, I have to assume it’s Gov’t, but who & for what reason.”
