“Dear PoPville,

Today (9/5) two guys were walking their dogs and letting them defacate on the property of the Howard University Divinity School directly behind the no trespassing no walking dogs sign. And when I told one of them that the sign indicates dogwalking isn’t permitted, he smiled and replied “oh, we just ignore it.” (more…)

Seaton Place, NW

A reader reports:

“I guess this is acceptable moving protocol now? The worst part – it takes up the sidewalk (no one with a wheel chair can pass) AND an entire parking spot on the Wednesday side of the road during street sweeping days!

I plan to clean it up tonight – but this is definitely ridiculous.

*Note – I saw these bad Samaritans on film & 311 has been called*”

From a Change.org petition:

“A proposal is underway to build a new heliport at 12th and Water Street SE, in the Capitol Hill neighborhood at the base of the 11th street bridge. This is a short-sighted use of prime riverfront land. There have been zero discussions with the community on the location and the environmental, health and quality of life impacts. We need to speak up NOW to be involved in the decision-making process before it’s too late. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was hoping readers could help with suggestions for a construction nuisance we’re dealing with in my building.

Our building has ~16 spaces along the backside of it, with traffic in the alley. On a daily basis, construction vehicles for a project on the next street over use the alley for access to the construction site, and block the entire alley. Most days it’s with their work trucks, on special days we get cement trucks that are completely immovable. The reality is that I’ve been late to doctor’s appointments, other residents can’t get to work, etc.

The issue we’re running into is, of course, enforcement. (more…)

From the the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty:

“The Law Center is disappointed at the common misconceptions in NoMa BID’s open letter. We understand that people are worried about their ability to safely walk through public spaces and would also like to point out that we should be equally concerned about the safety of solutions for the underrepresented NoMa residents – those living with homelessness.

The request to place “pedestrian safe-passage zones” in NoMa can quickly become a way to exclude vulnerable NoMa residents. It is an act of dividing human beings into groups of people who are considered “illegally encamped” and those who are not, those deemed worthy of safety and those who are not. We are falling into an “us versus them” narrative, which sees the “other” as a threat that must be strategically removed. (more…)

Got reports last night of ATVs/Dirt Bikes (up to 100) riding from H Street, NE to Georgia Ave, to 14th Street to Logan Circle to Dupont to the monuments to Crystal City. Unfortunately one reader reports a man was injured when struck by one rider of a “Bright blue dirt bike” badly enough to be taken into an ambulance:

“It was at 18th and Mass NW. The man was an older black man, probably in his 60s. The biker was on wrong side of road when he hit the man. The biker was in blue but I didn’t see his face. He stopped briefly to look behind him but then kept going. (more…)

From AlertDC:

“The United States Secret Service (USSS) and the National Park Service (NPS) will expand the Pennsylvania Avenue NW closure in front of the White House. Pennsylvania Avenue will be closed from West Executive Avenue to East Executive Avenue for public safety during construction of the new fence. (more…)

From a press release:

“The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today awarded $1 million to the District of Columbia Housing Authority to identify and reduce lead-based paint hazards in the agency’s older public housing units. Nationally, $27.8 million is being awarded to 38 Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) in 25 states.

Provided through HUD’s Public Housing Capital Fund, these grants will be targeted to approximately 2,800 public housing units, most of which are currently occupied by families with young children. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Are noise complaints about trash trucks worth filing? Every few weeks an incredibly loud trash truck shows up at a nearby building around 6:30 a.m. and moves a dumpster back and forth for an hour. I’m thinking of filing a complaint with the Department of Consumer & Regulatory Affairs because it’s before the 7 a.m. legal start time, but not sure whether anything will happen and curious what proof would be most useful (a video?). If it matters, this is in a mixed residential and commercial block near Thomas Circle. Thanks!
