Report of Man Hit By Dirt Bike in a crosswalk after 100+ Dirt Bikes and ATVs rode through town; At the Washington Monument “They were circling families and spinning dirt and rocks to hit them with. Children were crying everywhere.”

Got reports last night of ATVs/Dirt Bikes (up to 100) riding from H Street, NE to Georgia Ave, to 14th Street to Logan Circle to Dupont to the monuments to Crystal City. Unfortunately one reader reports a man was injured when struck by one rider of a “Bright blue dirt bike” badly enough to be taken into an ambulance:

“It was at 18th and Mass NW. The man was an older black man, probably in his 60s. The biker was on wrong side of road when he hit the man. The biker was in blue but I didn’t see his face. He stopped briefly to look behind him but then kept going. (more…)

“HUD AWARDS $1 MILLION TO CLEAN UP LEAD HAZARDS IN DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA PUBLIC HOUSING”

“The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today awarded $1 million to the District of Columbia Housing Authority to identify and reduce lead-based paint hazards in the agency’s older public housing units. Nationally, $27.8 million is being awarded to 38 Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) in 25 states.

Provided through HUD’s Public Housing Capital Fund, these grants will be targeted to approximately 2,800 public housing units, most of which are currently occupied by families with young children. (more…)

“Noise complaint for trash truck?”

“Dear PoPville,

Are noise complaints about trash trucks worth filing? Every few weeks an incredibly loud trash truck shows up at a nearby building around 6:30 a.m. and moves a dumpster back and forth for an hour. I’m thinking of filing a complaint with the Department of Consumer & Regulatory Affairs because it’s before the 7 a.m. legal start time, but not sure whether anything will happen and curious what proof would be most useful (a video?). If it matters, this is in a mixed residential and commercial block near Thomas Circle. Thanks!

Columbia Heights Plaza “There has to be a balance.”

I witnessed a violent shouting match at 6:30 am, followed by the usual group of men drinking in front of the former Heights taproom, and ending with a heinous comment before I arrived at the Metro. And that was just my walk to work.

“Dear PoPville,

I live off 14th St NW on a quiet residential street. Last night, construction workers were doing VERY LOUD construction on our street between 11pm-2am. Around 1am I went downstairs to complain about the noise. I was one of multiple neighbors complaining. No one could sleep. Supposedly they had a permit from the city to be conducting this work until 5am but I have a hard time believing this. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

People moved out of their house on 17th and Q, left this trash since late last week lying on the sidewalk. Do you know what actions we can/should take to get it removed?”

Another reader includes me on a note to their ANC:

“I’m not 100% sure what is going on here, but there has been this disastrous mess outside of the 1500 Block of 17th Street, NW since Thursday! Garbage is literally tossed to the street corner (please see above) probably with the hope that the city will clean it up, which isn’t fair! I’m sure the DC rat population is having a field day with this heaven of fiflth. I live right around the corner and I’ve seen a number of men probably in their late-20’s / early-30’s who periodically party inside and outside of the house. I could care less about that, but what I do care about is this current situation and the fact that they think someone else will come by and clean it up!”

Ed. Note: The ANC promptly replied that they would “engage the DPW inspector”.

“Dear PoPville,

My neighbors in the apartment next to mine (we share a wall) recently got a new dog. The problem is that whenever the owners aren’t home, he barks incessantly (howls can be heard across the hallway) and the owners seem not to care or are not bothered by it. One of our other neighbors even wrote a note to them recently complaining and politely asking them to do something about it.

I love dogs and completely understand that they can be under stress when in a new home and alone, but this has been going on for multiple months now and is getting out of hand. I shouldn’t be able to hear his howls hours on end from my living room. What is the proper thing to do… get my apartment management involved? Talk to the neighbors again? I don’t want them to remove the dog but there has to be a proper way to handle this.
