From a press release:

“Today, The Wharf, Washington, DC’s world-class waterfront neighborhood, in partnership with the Southwest Business Improvement District (SWBID) and the Italian-inspired culinary collective Officina, unveiled a large-scale, outdoor crochet art installation of US Vice President Kamala Harris in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The piece is the work of the LA-based, international “yarn bomber” and street artist London Kaye. Kaye has been commissioned for a myriad of art installations including murals in Times Square, a school bus wrap for The Gap and a takeover of Kelly Clarkson’s television show studio. This latest work featuring Vice President Harris is titled “I’m Speaking” and is her largest installation to date, spanning 40-feet in width and 20-feet in height. (more…)

Thanks to Martha Wilson for the reminder: “6:30 Big crowd this morning! This D.C. art installation will be gone tonight (Saturday), so if you’re a fan of @VP @KamalaHarris, swing by the Reflecting Pool (installation depicts “glass ceiling breakage”).” (more…)

From Senator Tom Carper’s Office:

“U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.), a senior member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC), is, once again, leading a group of Democratic senators in re-introducing legislation to grant Washington, D.C. statehood. The bill, which Senator Carper first introduced in 2013, would make Washington, D.C. the 51st state, finally give its citizens full representation in Congress, and also ensure that the citizens and elected leaders of the District of Columbia have full authority overlocal affairs, including crucial safety and security matters. The Washington, D.C. Admission Act (S.51) would also designate the areas surrounding the White House, the Capitol, the Supreme Court, and the National Mall as the seat of the federal government. That area would inherit the name the “Capital” and remain under the control of Congress, as mandated by the Constitution. (more…)

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser released the following statement on the inauguration of the 46th President of the United States of America Joseph R. Biden and the first woman, the first Black American, and the first South Asian American to serve as Vice President, Kamala Harris.

“After a year unlike any other – one that challenged each and every American – today, we begin a new chapter. We join Americans nationwide in celebrating the resiliency of our democracy and an Administration committed to uniting and uplifting a nation deeply scarred by divisiveness, extremism, and a pandemic that rages on after already claiming the lives of more than 400,000 Americans.

“But today we feel hopeful. (more…)

A few folks have been asking me what folks are doing for inauguration. The Mayor and Governors of Maryland and Virginia are “are taking the extraordinary step of encouraging Americans not to come to Washington, DC and to instead participate virtually.” But for folks who live in the District, will you be staying home or heading out of town? Obviously the coronavirus has been surging too, which just adds to these craziest of days.

From the D.C. National Guard:

“The District of Columbia National Guard (DCNG) is activating several hundred personnel today to support the city government during expected demonstrations this week.

Approximately 340 personnel will support the city government Jan. 5 to 7 by providing crowd control at several Metro stations and assist police with street closures at multiple intersections to provide safety in and around pedestrian areas. (more…)

Ed. Note: Last night the Washington Post reported that a Proud Boy leader was arrested for burning a Black Lives Matter banner last month and

“Police said Tarrio, who was in custody Monday evening, also was charged with two felony counts of possession of high-capacity ammunition feeding devices, which is a legal term for a magazine that allows guns to hold additional bullets.”

From the DC Attorney General’s Office:

“Attorney General Karl A. Racine today issued the following statement regarding the upcoming demonstrations that will take place in downtown D.C. on January 5 and 6.

“The District of Columbia is a community that respects every person. We also respect the First Amendment’s guarantees around freedom of expression and value peaceful protest as a hallowed American tradition.

“But the Constitution does not grant the right to commit violence or vandalize property, and there is certainly no right to engage in acts of hate.

“It has been publicly reported that several groups–including some that promote hate on a racial and religious basis–will be traveling to the District for demonstrations on January 5 and 6. Some may have plans to stay through the end of the week.

“Make no mistake: many of these individuals have stated that they are coming to the District to provoke residents and wreak havoc. (more…)
