I think my wife’s friend summed it up best when he txt’d us shortly after visiting Bill’s Seafood Kitchen (aka Fish in the Hood) for the first time on our recommendation:

“F**k you for not telling me about this sooner.”

Some other friends of ours live close to Bill’s Seafood Kitchen (3601 Georgia Ave. NW near Otis) and raved about it for quite some time, yet we never went. In fact, we’d lived in Petworth almost three and a half years before trying it.

Now, it is like an addiction. The wife and I discuss how long it has been since we last went–and if it has been an acceptable amount of time in order to go again.

It has become our DC best kept secret. And I’d like to hear about yours, too. But first, more about this amazing place.

Bill’s (most people just call it Fish in the Hood because of the window signage) makes amazing seafood. It has been briefly mentioned here before, but it is kind of surprising how under the radar it is, even by Petworth standards. It isn’t much to look at, but they keep the focus on what’s important–the fish. It’s a little overwhelming when you walk inside. There are about a dozen or more varieties of fish (you know a place has it goin’ on when you order tilapia and they ask “male or female?”), plus scallops and shrimp. Once you order (by weight) they will expertly fry or broil your fish. The sides are pretty great too. And they have this stuff called “Mango sauce” which is the most amazing sauce for fish and chicken you’ll ever try.

Discovering Bill’s has suddenly made us interested in finding other “best kept secrets.” Of course, these places aren’t literally secrets–but they are just so sweet to discover. Sure, there are some places that might be categorized as “best kept secrets” that, literally, are best kept secret. But hey, you have to kiss a few frogs to find a prince, right?

Out most recent discovery has been Ruff and Ready just over the line in Hyattsville/PG County. They only have three items on the menu: blue crab, Alaska King Crab legs, and spiced shrimp. That’s it. No sides. No fuss. Nothing. But those three items are to die for.

So let’s hear yours? Any recent discoveries or places you think others would flip out about? Things mostly under the radar that you’d love to see more widely enjoyed?

“Dear PoPville,

I found this yorkie yesterday afternoon running around grant circle. He’s a male yorkie with a blue harness, no collar and tag, and the microchip was not registered.

They can contact me at [email protected].

I know someone misses him dearly and I want him to reunite with his owners.”

The Petworth Community Market opens today! Join us from 4 PM to 8 PM every Friday starting today, May 20, through September 30 for this popular neighborhood gathering. Pick up fresh fruits and vegetables, egss, locally roasted coffee beans, pastries, aromatic teas, grass-fed meats, artisanal breads; linger to hear the weekly music.

The Petworth Community Market runs Fridays, 4 PM to 8 PM, through September 30, along Ninth Street at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Upshur Street, NW. Special events will occur throughout the summer, including chef demonstrations, artist appearances and local musicians. On the last Friday of each month, the market will feature live music from a variety of local bands.

Fresh off last week’s successful fundraiser at Domku Bar & Café, this year’s market builds on the successes of our inaugural year by welcoming SNAP benefits recipients with an EBT Machine and an “Extra Cash” program, accepting credit card transactions, hiring a new market manager, and ensuring more convenient hours for our customers.

North Capitol Main Street is heating it up at the old firehouse!

Join us this Saturday, May 21st, from 7 to 10 PM, 1626 North Capitol Street, NW.

$25 bucks (in advance, $30 at the door) gets you awesome live jazz, wine and beer, good eats, and door prizes from some of the hot businesses in this cool part of town.

Saturday, May 21, from 12 to 4p.m, 25 vendors will test their product at an almost risk free environment during the second Grey Market held at Local 16.

Grey DC, like many renegade markets popping up in cities, is an organization dedicated to building a stronger community in Washington DC. Grey DC allows vendors an outlet who lack the commercial kitchens and licenses needed to operate elsewhere. “The goal is for people to come into the program with an idea and come out a functioning business with a strong customer base,” explains founder Maya Robinson . “I’m hoping eventually people will go on to start filling empty retail spaces in DC.”

To enter the market, patrons must sign a waiver and pay a $5 fee. Specific vendor information can be found
here.

Looks like Market 77 is expanding up Georgia Ave, NW. A few weeks ago we learned of the new spot just south of the Petworth-Georgia Ave metro (photo above) and now they are also opening one up at the corner of 9th and Varnum St, NW (just east of Georgia, photo below). They also have a store at Georgia and Irving St, NW in Parkview (I think it’s Irving St, right?).

There was a bit of chatter on the Petworth listserv that some folks thought the idea of 24 market there might not be a good idea. You think a 24 hour market on that corner will be a convenience a nuisance?

“Dear PoP,

A “No Dog Walking” sign went up in Rock Creek Cemetery sometime in the past week (I noticed it on Saturday). I fear that folks may have been taking advantage of the cemetery – allowing their dogs to go off leash or not cleaning up after them, but I’m really sad to lose my favorite dog walking locale. I wonder if you knew any more about it, or who I could email at the church to politely request that they rethink their decision.”

Another reader wonders if the ban might be related to the recent theft of bronze sculptures or a school coming to the grounds.

I know it may sound strange to people not familiar with the cemetery but this has long been a spot for people to take their dogs. Anyone know if folks take dogs to Congressional Cemetery?

Rock Creek Church Cemetery is located at Rock Creek Church Rd and Webster St, NW, near the Old Soldiers Home grounds.

From a press release:

Join us for an opening reception and artist talk with Nekisha Durrett to celebrate the installation of Durrett’s iconic public artwork, Sweet, on Saturday, May 14th in the Petworth neighborhood.

Nekisha, a Petworth-based artist, designed the large scale, two-dimensional piece installed on the exterior façade of the 3Tree Flats building. She describes the piece: “Her hovering head one story tall, a young woman looks coolly over her Georgia Avenue with one bold, yellow bubbly adjective in a thought cloud over her flowing locks — Sweet. She looks toward the street observing traces of the past, the vitality of the present and future, and the prideful spirit of her evolving community.”

WHO: Cultural Development Corporation, JAIR LYNCH Development Partners and AHD, Inc.
WHAT: Opening reception and artist talk with Nekisha Durrett.
WHERE: 3Tree Flats lobby (3910 Georgia Avenue, NW)
WHEN: Saturday, May 14, 2-4pm

“Dear PoP,

Moroni Bros. at Decatur St. & Georgia Ave. has extended their bar space. Looks nice. It’s so new, the finish is still a little tacky to the touch. I spoke with Denis, the owner, about the changes. He said they will have five beers on tap. Just thought the neighborhood would like to know.”

Moroni & Brothers is located at 4811 Georgia Ave. NW and has some of the best pizza in the city. Do you like the idea of an expanded bar area?
