From MPD:

“1) On today’s date [Saturday], at approx. 17:08 hours, and adult male was observed by members of 3-D VICE staling an unattended bicycle from the 1000 block of U Street, NW. VICE stopped, arrested and charged the Defendant with “Theft-1.”

2) On today’s date [Saturday], at approximately 21:00 hours, 3-D VICE Sgt. Arthur Gregory intervened on a “Theft-1 Stolen Bike” in progress. Another adult male defendant was attempted to break a bicycle from a bike lock when Sgt. Gregory interrupted him. The Defendant attempted to flee on foot while armed with a crow-bar pipe, but after a brief foot pursuit, Sgt. Gregory apprehended the defendant without incident. The defendant was arrested and charged with “Theft-1 Bike”. Recovered was the crow-bar/pipe, the stolen bike and a damaged Kryptonite bike lock.

Prevention Tip of the Day: Never leave you Bicycle unattended, even for a second. This is all it take for an assailant to made away with your property. Always lock your bicycle when leaving it unattended. The best locking mechanism to prevent a bike theft is a heavy gauge U lock, although any lock is better than none.”

Lots of folks have been emailing about the new paint job at the former Lavandou space in Cleveland Park next to Nanny O’Briens. Word on the street is that it’s going to be the new home of Coppi’s. Their website currently says “Updated contact information coming soon!”

But perhaps of greater interest is news of who’s going to take over Coppi’s (and Utopia’s) old space on U Street. Washington Business Journal reports:

“District Distillery recently sought approval to open a combination distillery and restaurant at one of the city’s hottest intersections, 14th and U streets NW, according to plans submitted to the D.C. Zoning Administrator. The concept would encompass more than 7,000 square feet at 1414 and 1418 U Street, formerly home to Coppi’s Organic and Utopia restaurants, respectively.”

Updates when progress is made:

I’m hearing the long vacant (and sometimes troubled) properties on the 1300 block of U Street, NW have finally sold. The State of the Union building was listed for sale for $2.2 million back in December. And you guessed it – word is plans are to combine the lots for condos and retail on the first floor. Definitely looking forward to learning more about the plans and seeing some renderings. Updates when/if more info becomes available.

“Dear PoPville,

Was just heaving the u st vida [Sunday] and several women were standing at front desk with a police officer – the locks had been cut off their lockers while they were using the gym and all their stuff stolen.

The lights are all in the locker rooms because of an electrical issue – not sure if related or not.

Any one else hear of other gyms bring hit?”

Ed. Note: We used to get regular reports of similar occurrences from the Washington Sports Club in Columbia Heights but it’s been a while since I’ve received a report.

From MPD:

“At approximately 9:20 pm tonight [Friday], Third District Units observed several ATV’s operating recklessly in the area of 14th & U Street NW. At that time, the Scooter Tactical Unit was deployed to the location to monitor and assess the situation. They were advised that the group had moved up at the Crown Gas Station located at 908 Florida Ave NW. The Scooter Tactical Unit responded and was able to successfully apprehend one individual operating an ATV without incident. Additionally, after fleeing, a second individual bailed off a dirt bike at 9th & T St NW. The members were able to recover that dirt bike for evidence as well. NOTE: the use of ATV’s and Dirt Bikes recklessly on our streets will not be tolerated and we encourage all citizens to alert police when the observe the usage or storage of these vehicles. Thank you”

Ed. Note: A marked change in messaging from what we’ve previously heard.

Another reader emails around 8:30pm last night “dirt bikes jousting with cars”:

“Just driving home eastbound on M between 1st NW and North Capitol. About a dozen dirt bikes there driving the wrong way down all three lanes, literally charging straight at oncoming cars. Had to keep screeching to a halt. Then they’d go off to the side and wait for another car to come along and charge at it. Only about half of them had lights — really scary! Why can’t the police do anything about this again?”
