Yes! The liquor license application of The Bird says (naturally):

“Restaurant specializing in poultry dishes with seating for 99 and a Total Occupancy Load of 125 inside premises. Request made for a Sidewalk Café with 65 seats and a Summer Garden with 35 seats.”

Updates when they get closer to opening. I love this name but of course it does plant this classic straight in my head too – so sorry about that:

fire
Andrew tweets us the photo above Dec. 20th “Fire at City Market at O”

A reader reports:

“-The fire department has come twice to put out a fire on the 2nd floor and the 7th floor of building 800 P Street NW.

-Both fires were started because something caught on fire on the stove because the tenants were not aware the stove had turned on

-The stoves are electric and have no safety lock. You can see pictures of the stoves on the City Market at O gallery page on the website. And you can see the layout of the apartments on the website too. The kitchen is in the hallway making it even easier to walk by and bump the knobs when walking by because the halls are so narrow.

-Management has been informed by residents that they have had things catch on fire on the stove because they are not aware that it has turned on and that something needs to be done to make them safer but to date they have not done anything to remedy this problem. They received this noticed after the first time the fire department came in November and did nothing and now the fire department came this Sunday and they still have not said anything to the residents or done anything.

-The sprinklers this Sunday and at least a foot of water filled several of the apartments on the 7th floor of 800 P Street NW causing water damage.”

From a press release:

“New neighbors San Francisco-based bike bag & apparel maker Chrome Industries and local DC electric bike manufacturer Riide will be joining forces for a large launch party & pre-party holiday bike ride on Saturday, December 19th. Both shops opened their doors in the last two months in Shaw’s new “The Shay” development.

Building on DC’s recent bike culture boom, these two brands hope to tap into and further expand the “people who bike” demographic, making cycling in the city more accessible for commuters and messengers alike.

Chrome industries just celebrated its 20th anniversary of building military-grade, waterproof, American-made backpacks and messenger bags – the Shaw location will be just their 9th brick-and-mortar retail hub in the US. Customers visiting the store can design a custom bag to be made onsite by their on-staff bag-maker, or shop pre-made bags, clothing, and footwear. Riide was founded just two years ago as a successful Kickstarter campaign, and is one of the lightest, most durable, most thoughtful electric bicycles on the market. Their lease-to-own “RiidePass” program has garnered a lot of attention so far, offering a bike, theft insurance and maintenance for less than a monthly metro pass.

Chrome has a longstanding, well-earned reputation  for throwing some of the wildest launch parties on the block. A pre-party “Slow Roll” ride will launch at 1pm from Chrome’s store at the intersection of U & 9th Street NW (1924 8th St NW #115), and cruise the city before ending at the launch party itself, hosted by Colony Club (3118 Georgia Ave NW). Attendees can expect ample adult beverages, Goldsprints (an adrenaline-pumping stationary bike racing game), live-painting of a Riide bike frame, bike speakers, and Chrome backpack, and exclusive prizes and giveaways. The ride and event are hosted in conjunction with One Love Massive, a local DC booking agency and event promotion company.

Event details:

Pre-party bike ride: 1:00-4:00pm, launching from Chrome Industries @ 1924 8th St NW, Suite #115.

Post-ride launch party: 4:00-10:00pm, at Colony Club cafe @ 3118 Georgia Ave NW.”

A reader witnessed:

“This morning, I was heading out for a run going west down Rhode Island. As I was approaching 7th, a tow truck turned right from 7th onto Rhode Island with a blue pick-up truck being towed in back. Shortly after it turned, a big bearded guy with a flannel shirt on turned the corner at full sprint, right in the road. I mean, he was HAULING. He actually caught up to the tow truck and managed to hop into the driver’s seat of the blue truck being towed, coffee cup still in hand. It couldn’t tell if it was from Compass Coffee, but given the location, I like to think it was.

Of course, once the tow truck hitches up your car, there’s no talking them out of a tow. But at least he found the most efficient way to get to the lot, and still had his morning coffee.”

Back in July we noted Fishnet had closed their Shaw location and were left with the words “We’ll be back in the Fall with a new accessible, approachable vacation-inspired brand” and:

Now we have Drift on 7th: “Sustainable seafood at an affordable price in the heart of Shaw in Washington, DC”

Lots of details from a press release:

“Ferhat `Yalçın` is excited to announce his new concept Drift on 7th (1819 7TH ST NW) will open January 2016. The new menu will feature sustainable seafood at an affordable price. Painted in soothing blue tones, the design of the restaurant and welcoming service evokes feelings of escape from the hustle and bustle of DC.

Blue catfish, which is considered an invasive species by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, makes an appearance on `Yalçın` ‘s menu. In addition to encouraging the necessary transference of this fish from the bay to restaurant menus, Drift will donate a portion of the proceeds from each blue catfish dish sold to The Wide Net Project.

Other entrees include a rotating catch of the day, prepared and served simply to highlight the fish itself, in 6 to 8oz portions with a lemon wedge and a choice of side. Seafood staples are here as well in the form of fish and chips, Maine lobster roll, PEI mussels, and cedar plank salmon. The Pineland beef burger, also from Maine, offers a hearty land option. You win some, you lose some. More info on that giant roof deck emerging over Florida Ave from Takoda:

“Shaw welcomes TAKODA, an American restaurant and year-round rooftop beer garden featuring 24 American Draft Beers, 51+ American Whiskeys, and an exciting twist on Americana cuisine!”

Shaw’s burgeoning restaurant and bar scene is arguably the hottest in Washington, with a slew of new projects. The next big name in the neighborhood: TAKODA, an American restaurant and year-round rooftop beer garden from hospitality entrepreneurs Ryan Seelbach and Eric Lund. The two-story space at 715 Florida Ave., Northwest is being built from scratch in a 1920’s-era brick structure, originally a Federal Life Insurance building.

Edit Lab at Streetsense (Red Hen, Daikaya) is behind the classic-industrial look of the entry-level bar and dining area, and 120-person beer garden above. Guests on the first floor will find two and four-person booths and seated tables, surrounded by the building’s original brick walls and wood ceiling beams. The roof deck will be accented with hanging and potted plants around a horseshoe-shaped bar, and will be partially covered with a canopy system. Removable windows allow for year-round eating and drinking with an outdoor feel.

Check out their menu here.

Now hiring so standby for an opening date.
