“Dear PoPville,

We’ve been to Domku a few times recently and keep peeking in to see the progress on Petworth Citizen. Looks a little quiet. Do you have an update on the opening?”

I spoke with owner Paul Ruppert (Room 11, Passenger etc.) who tells me they’ve made nice progress and are on track to open around the first week of October (knock wood, knock wood.)

“Petworth Citizen” is inspired by the community newspaper of the same name that chronicled Petworth neighborhood happenings from 1916 – 1951. “Petworth Citizen” will be a neighborhood bar (829 Upshur St, NW) with great bar food and a literary focus. The name also points to our intention to become a gathering place, welcoming neighbors from near and far.”

And in possibly even bigger news the unnamed spot from Mr. Ruppert located across the street should open about three months after the Petworth Citizen opens. They’ve recently applied for a liquor license which says:

“Restaurant serving a chef – driven menu of Japanese-French inspired food and cocktails. Seating capacity and total load of 25.”

More info as they get closer to opening. If you’ll excuse me for a few moments I’m going to go weep with joy…

Back in November 2012 we heard about a restaurant incubator hoping to come to 3607 Georgia Ave, NW across the street from Lion’s Liquors, DC Reynolds and Looking Glass Lounge:

Back in Nov. 2012 they were raising money under the name eatsplace. While the name is now Baba’s Cooking School, according to a recent liquor license application – it will be awesome:

“Tavern style restaurant incubator serving eclectics, innovative cuisine, including dumplings and street food. Request a summer garden with 20 seats and entertainment endorsement with live music and ensembles. Seating capacity 60 and total occupancy load of 69.”

Updates when they get closer to opening.

Update from the owner:

“While permits were filed under the name Baba’s Cooking School, a final name hasn’t been selected. The concept of a restaurant food incubator and pop-uppery with chef residencies is the same. And we’re still blogging our progress on at www.EatsPlace.com.”

A reader sends the petition posted by a group called DC Safe Streets:

“Muriel Bowser and Mayor Gray : Stop violent group home from moving next door to Powell Elementary

The placement of this facility at 1345 Taylor St. NW is dangerous to the students of Powell Elementary School and the neighboring community.”

As of Wed. afternoon it had 131 signatures. Following is the full letter:

“To:
Vincent Gray, Mayor, Washington DC
Muriel Bowser, Ward 4 Council Member

I am deeply concerned about news that a residential youth drug rehabilitation facility is being placed at 1345 Taylor Street NW. Neighbors were not notified in advance of the property owner’s intent to place a youth drug rehabilitation facility on the property.

This building is just across the alley from the Powell Elementary playground and less than a block away from a DCRA and DC police identified nuisance property with a history of violence and drug activity. Placing youths undergoing drug rehabilitation so close to known drug dealers is inappropriate and unsafe for the residents of the rehabilitation facility, the students of Powell Elementary, surrounding neighbors. “Dear PoPville,

Was walking my dog and chatting with another dog owner and his friends when we all heard 4 or 5 pops. The other guys jumped behind a building and told my husband and I “those weren’t fireworks, better head home” and sure enough, about 10 minutes later, police had crime scene tape up blocking access to 9th Street NW, just south of Quincy.”

MPD writes:

“At about 7:40 pm, Fourth District police received a call for sounds of gunshots in the 3700 block of 9th Street, NW. Once on the scene, officers discovered several damaged vehicles. Investigation led police to a suspect hiding nearby. There are no reported injuries and the investigation is still ongoing.

If anyone witnessed or has information about this event, please contact the Metropolitan Police Department at (202) 727-9099.”

Back in April we learned that the Blue Banana had closed at 3632 Georgia Avenue, NW by DC Reynolds and Looking Glass Lounge just south of the Petworth metro. More scuttlebutt has come on in on the new management team. I hear the new team comes from the folks behind the Mason Inn in Glover Park, the Capitale nightclub on K Street and the George club in Georgetown. This scuttlebutt comes from two different sources who are both very confident in what they heard. One also hears that the new space will be called the Petworth Patio. Stay tuned.
