Has anyone noticed the crazy wine prices at the Petworth Safeway? Typically cheap bottles there are now ~$10 dollars more than Trader Joes or the local corner stores. Is this some marketing scheme to increase prices only to make the discounts seem substantial? Has anyone else seen this practice at other Safeways in DC? This is clearly a first world problem but me and my fellow winos are curious about what’s going on.”

3rd or 4th time in a year this fire hydrant has continually run on corner of Webster Street NW and Illinois Ave NW. 5th straight day and 311 has been contacted and if you see on hydrant it says out of service.”

On Monday night a reader reported shots were fired around the 4000 block of Illinios Ave, NW at 11:30pm. “6-8 shots fired”. The ANC rep responded in the comments:
“MPD confirms they responded to ‘sounds of gun fire’ but found no evidence or individuals needing medical attention.”
And now a reader updates us that shell casing were found Wednesday morning: “They found a bunch of casings on Taylor between Illinois and 4th this morning.”
Another reader reports: “Looked like at least 5 spots marked”.
According to one resident some officers on the scene “didn’t even know about the report of shots fired Monday”.

As I write this, I can still hear the mowers, weedwackers and leaf blowers …. why are contractors (anywhere) but especially at a DC public school (Raymond Elementary) mowing grass at midnight? It’s Sunday night, now after 12:15 and they are still out there – wouldn’t local noise ordinances cover this? They ended up stopping around 12:40am, still… pretty late for that kind of noise.”

More good upper 14th Street news, at long last Little Coco’s is close to opening. For real – don’t let the rough facade fool ya – I peeked in last week and was told that opening by the end of the month is very realistic. Did I mention they have a sweet roof deck? You will not be disappointed – and check the draft menu too:
The transformation from Rib Pit Lounge is another staggering one – stay tuned for an exact opening date.

Update from Chez Billy to clear up some of the rumors. Renovation on the space has “started for a new concept” today. What exactly the new concept will be still needs to be “ironed out”. They are hoping renovations will only take a month but realize in reality it could take longer. Maybe two months. No employees were laid off. All will be invited back when they reopen with the new concept. Also employees can transfer to their other restaurants. Updates when more is known on the new concept. (more…)
