“WHAT: The grand opening of The Yards Marina, hosted by Forest City in collaboration with Living Classrooms. The DC metro area is invited to a free afternoon of family-friendly activities along the Anacostia River as part of the Marina’s opening day celebration.

The Yards Marina features 50 boat slips with dockage for boats up to 125 feet in length, a water taxi dock, an education dock and a paddler dock for kayaks and smaller personal boats. Half of the slips are designed for long-term, seasonal use, while the other half are intended for short-term occupation of ten days or less. Transient slips are available for the opening event at no charge. Space is limited; please contact Living Classrooms at 202-488-0627 to reserve.

Whaley’s Launches Bar Menu and Opens Patio “with sweeping river views” Today

“Whaley’s will debut its Bar Menu this Wednesday, June 15th in the historic Lumber Shed at The Yards, located at 301 Water Street SE in the growing Navy Yard/Capitol Riverfront District.

The Bar Menu is available Sunday-Thursday 5pm – 7pm and will focus on fun, small and shareable plates. Dishes will include:

· Old Bay Potato Chips with Chive Crème Fraiche and Trout Roe $8

· Crawfish Hushpuppies with Sweet and Spicy Mustard Aioli $10

· Soft Shell Crab Sandwich with Horseradish Mayo and Pickled Red Onion $18

Longtime friend, mentor and collaborator Brian Zipin and Bar Manager Nick Miller have assembled a beverage menu that features a bounty of good drinks all under $10. Imbibe on refreshing cocktails; gin, campari and sweet vermouth topped with stiegl radler or dill aquavit with cochi vermouth and lime. Also find beers and wines by the glass.

Whaley’s is also opening the Patio this Wednedsday, June 15th. The Patio has seating for 26 with sweeping river views in Yards Park. The full menu is available on the Patio.”

Shooting in Navy Yard just before 9:30pm Monday Night

A reader reported just before Monday night:

“This is the scene outside my house right now. At least 9-10 gunshots at around 9:15. Man shot, that’s the clothes and towels in the foreground. He was awake when taken to the hospital. Cops said more like 15-20 shots. I think the victim is in stable condition. It was a very quick response by both the police and the ambulance, they were there in minutes.”

From MPD:

“Members of the First District are currently investigating a shooting that occurred at approximately 9:24pm in the 900 block of 5th St SE. Members of the First District responded to the location for a report of multiple gunshots and found an adult male victim who had been wounded. The victim was quickly transported to the hospital for treatment. This case is being actively investigated by the First District Detectives Unit. If you have any information, please call 202-299-2025.”

Conte’s Bike Shop coming to Navy Yard first as a Pop Up then Permanently in 2017

“A popular local bike retailer with multiple locations will be riding into The Yards temporarily over the next two weeks and then returning for good early next year. Conte’s Bike Shop, a Virginia Beach-based bike shop has agreed to locate its latest DC-metro store at The Yards. The announcement was made today by Forest City, master developer of The Yards, DC’s premier urban mixed-use waterfront neighborhood located between the Washington Navy Yard and the Nationals ballpark in the Capitol Riverfront district.

Conte’s Bike Shop plans to first open later this week a temporary pop-up bike shop at The Yards offering bikes for sale or rent, repair services, clothing and gear, as well as expert advice. The pop up location will be on Tingey Street in Arris, the latest residential building to be completed at The Yards. Opening Thursday May 19th, the pop-up shop will operate until May 29th, being open Thursday through Sunday of each week. During this period the popular Tour de Fat cycling community event will take place at Yards Park (May 19-20), as well as Bike to Work Day in DC (Friday, May 20th). This will be the only bike shop resource in the growing Capitol Riverfront neighborhood.

In early 2017, Conte’s Bike Shop will return to The Yards in a more permanent store location with the opening of their latest full service bike shop. To be located on 4th Street SE in the new Arris apartments building, The Yards will be Conte’s ninth store location and their first location outside of Virginia. (more…)

When I said yesterday Navy Yard was about to be flush with oysters, I didn’t realize just how soon that was – Monday!!

From a press release:

“Whaley’s, a raw bar and restaurant, will open Monday, May 16th in the historic Lumber Shed at The Yards, located at 301 Water Street Suite 115 SE in the growing Navy Yard/Capitol Riverfront District.

Under Chef Daniel Perron— formerly of Fiola Mare, Blue Duck Tavern and The Oval Room—the opening menu will feature shellfish towers, crudos, a selection of seafood-focused plates and a rotating family-style platter for sharing. Dishes will feature items like:

Day Boat Scallop Crudo, Muscat Grapes, Sea Beans & Fennel Pollen
Jumbo Lump MD Crab Salad, Sea Urchin, Celery, Cucumber & Old Bay Chips
Crispy Soft Shell Crab, Peanut Romesco, Charred Tomatillos & Pickled Pearl Onion

Navy Yard About To Be Flush With Oysters

The placard for The Salt Line says:

“New restaurant, specializing in oysters. Total Occupancy Load is 130. Summer Garden with 120 seats.”

Back in March we learned the “group behind Sixth Engine, Town Hall and The Dubliner, is pleased to announce plans to open The Salt Line in Spring 2017.”

Seafood – not to mention a prominently featured raw bar – will be at the heart of Chef Kyle Bailey’s culinary program at The Salt Line. The menu will offer a selection of straightforward New England classics, along with Bailey’s own interpretations on the regional fare, and a few Chesapeake Bay-influenced specials. Chef Kyle Bailey’s affinity for whole-animal butchery and charcuterie will translate nicely to his plans for The Salt Line, which will include items such as seafood sausages, smoked and cured fish, and a variety of crudo. Bailey also plans to work with local oyster farms to create a proprietary oyster for the restaurant.

The Salt Line will also showcase a regional craft beer selection and a creative cocktail program that will be the centerpieces for the outdoor bar located along the riverfront. The Salt Line plans to serve dinner daily and weekend brunch upon opening.

With Whaley’s opening in Yards Park – Navy Yard will be, rightfully, flush with oysters soon!!
