Back in August ’10 we learned that L and N Thrift Store was closing at 1830 14th St, NW (just south of T St, NW across from Som Records.) I just saw today that a permit has gone up saying that it will become an art gallery:

I spoke with one of the workers who said it is a complete gut job and he let me take a peek. The space is much bigger than I thought. I’ll be sure to update as the gallery gets closer to opening.

This rental is located at 1927 17th St, NW:

Thanks to all who’ve been writing in about this.

“Dear PoP,

Thought you might be interested to know that after years of false permits and empty-dumpster theater, SORG Architects have finally begun work cleaning out the church building on 10th and V Streets, NW. Workers have been in there every day for about a week now, throwing away the detritus of decades of crumbling neglect. Although SORG still won’t deign to stoop so low as to respond to community residents’ inquiries about their plans, we are hopeful that this activity–the first in years–means the church structure will be saved and incorporated into whatever new structure is put up. A DC Real Estate blog mentioned recently that ground will be broken in Q1 2012 for a 6-story, 37-unit condo building that will also house SORG’s offices.”

Great to see/hear movement here!

The next “Adams Morgan” scare tactics come to H St, NE, Bloomingdale, Logan Circle, Columbia Heights T Street NW.  My favorite part is “New York investor”…

“Dear PoP,

I live on the 1400 block of T Street, site of the proposed Post Office Bistro.  Some alarmist neighbor slipped me this flyer last night, which makes a litany of exaggerated claims about the restaurant and states that “EVERYONE ON THE BLOCK NEEDS TO OPPOSE THIS AT THE MAY ANC MEETING” tonight (emphasis in original).  I generally stay out of these fights, but this flyer is so absurd that now I want to support the restaurant at tonight’s meeting.”

For those who missed the the post about the new bistro looking to come to the old post office building at 1407 T St, NW, the liquor license application said:

“Casual and relaxed bistro restaurant serving an extensive Saturday & Sunday brunch with and total occupancy load of 259. Request a Sidewalk Café with 56 seats and Summer Garden with 14 seats. In addition, requesting an Entertainment Endorsement featuring recorded music and DJ.”

From the event’s Facebook page:

Come on out Friday at 5pm and Hang out with Brandon and Jeff from DC Brau for happy hour and then get some practice for the 2011 Air Guitar championships come to DC in june by jamming out on Solly’s stage on FRIDAY THE 13th. In honor of this notorious date…..THERE WILL BE METAL.

DC BRAU will be giving away prizes in many categories. See flyer for details.

Rules
Official rules of competition

SOLLID METAL obeys almost the same rules set forth by the Air Guitar World Championships:

– Each performance is played to 2 minutes (120 sec.) of a song

– The 120 seconds can start anywhere in the song

– The instrument must be invisible & be a guitar, i.e. air drums not allowed

– Air roadies are allowed, but must leave the stage before the performance

– Back-up bands (air or real) are not allowed

US Air Guitar contests each consist of two rounds:

– Round 1 (freestyle): each competitor performs to a song of their choice

– Round 2 (compulsory): top competitors from round 1 perform surprise song

Thanks to a reader for sending word that the building has now gone gray. I think I like the gray better.

Anyway, the space sounds awesome:

Chef Richard Sandoval invites you to gather, dine and raise a glass at El Centro, D.F.
Authentic Mexican comfort food and fine Tequilas are served in three vibrant spaces.

TAQUERIA
A lively open kitchen is the backdrop for the casual taqueria. Eat-in or take your tacos to-go.

TEQUILERIA
Dine or lounge in the underground Tequileria,
where Mixologists craft Latin cocktails and pour from 200 Tequilas & Mezcals.

ROOFTOP
Salud! Raise a glass at the rooftop’s two open-air bars.

If anyone checks them out today/tonight (1819 14th St, NW) – let us know what you think!

We checked out Desperados right after they opened up in the old Polly’s space at 1342 U St, NW back in Aug. 10. Recently every time I walk by the space doesn’t seem to be too crowded (maybe it’s just my odd hours) so I thought I’d check in with folks. Any fans out there?

You can see their menu here.

Incidentally I’m liking that they’ve beautified the outside patio space a bit:
