We checked out Desperados right after they opened up in the old Polly’s space at 1342 U St, NW back in Aug. 10. Recently every time I walk by the space doesn’t seem to be too crowded (maybe it’s just my odd hours) so I thought I’d check in with folks. Any fans out there?

You can see their menu here.

Incidentally I’m liking that they’ve beautified the outside patio space a bit:

Gates will open at 7 pm. Attendees are encouraged to come early starting at 7 pm to picnic in the park and listen to music spun by local DJs. Free popcorn will be provided to the first 100 attendees beginning at 7 pm by Ventnor Sports Cafe. Showtime will be at sundown, exact time will vary. Donations and sponsorships towards the event, accepted at http://movies.ustreet-dc.org, will benefit Friends of Harrison Recreation Center, a nonprofit formed in 2009 that works directly with the Department of Parks and Recreation to improve the recreation center through capital improvements design changes and enhance management and programming of the park, with the goal of making Harrison Recreation Center a better designed, cleaner, safer, and better park in the neighborhood for all to use and enjoy.

Thanks to a reader for noticing that V Street Cafe located at 1113 V Street, NW (in the former Gori Cafe space), is no more and in its place is coming Italiano Cafe. I peeked in the window and it looks very close to opening, if it hasn’t opened already. I’m curious to see the menu. We’ll revisit for a judging restaurants post after they’ve been open for a few weeks.

Lots of changes since we last looked at the end of March. What do you think of the blue color? For those not familiar this will be a:

“New restaurant/Taqueria with entertainment serving Mexican cuisine. Entertainment to include acoustic bands, Mexican style music. Restaurant will have Summer Garden with 99 seats and a Sidewalk Café with14 seats. Total occupancy load is 274.”

And on a side note the old Go Mama Go space got painted white. This is the space that will become Current Boutique.

This home is located at 1509 Swann St, NW:

The flier says:

“LUXURY AT IT’S BEST. 4BR 3.5BA TOWN HOME ON PRETTY SWANN ST IN VIBRANT DUPONT. ORIGINALLY BUILT IN 1886 THIS PROPERTY HAS BEEN BEAUTIFULLY RENOVATED WITH TOP-OF-THE-LINE AMENITIES THROUGHOUT. You can find more info here and a virtual tour here.

Oh man, I’m digging that roof deck. Just awesome. What do you think of the rest of the house? This 4 bed/3 bath is yours for $1,599,000.

“Dear PoP,

Any idea what happened to the Angelico’s at 1334 U Street, NW? It seems to have reverted back to Jumbo Slice. Would be nice to know because there is a decent amount of us that have LivingSocial deals to it.”

Strange it was almost exactly a year ago that this space became an Angelico’s. So, I stopped by on Tues. afternoon and the guy working the front desk said it’s still under the same ownership they just decided to change the name and perhaps more importantly for the question above: they are still taking the LivingSocial deal.

Which do you think is a better name?

And just south of Logan Circle at 1418 12th St, NW (in the former Roosevelt Food Shoppe carryout space) comes Pizzolis Pizzeria. It’s a takeout place that opened up about two weeks ago that also will deliver if you live between 1.5-2 miles away. In addition to pizza they have stromboli, calzone, pasta, salads, subs, gyros and more. Their flier says:

“Pizzoli’s is your neighborhood pizzeria. Our goal is to serve the fresh natural ingredient and tasty food. All of our pizzas, stromboli, flat bread and foccacia bread made with organic flour. Our dough is made fresh daily on site with 100% organic wheat flour mixed with spring water and extra virgin olive oil. Our pizza sauce is made with organic sweet tomato with real italian herbs and kosher salt topped with top quality fresh ingredient and best cheese money can buy.”

Sounds awesome – makes me wish I lived within the delivery zone.

“Dear PoP,

Went back to pick up my scrip and we were asked to leave, cvs up to metro exit are roped off.”

DCfireems tweets:

“Susp package- 1000 blk U st NW- CVS (near Vermont Av & U St/African Amer Civil War Mem Metro Stop)- area cordoned off – Police handling”
