The Craigslist ad says:

“Small studio apartment in sunny English basement

$1100 sound right for this studio?

“Dear PoP,

Just wanted to let you know that Ketcha Fire is finally open. I stopped in on my way home and picked up an order of jerk chicken wings. They were tasty and the folks working there were super friendly. They are open late – I think they said 11PM during the week and something like 3AM on Thurs-Sat nights.”

Ketcha Fire Grill is located across the street from Dodge City at 928 U St, NW (b/w Vermont and 9th.) And it looks like another good late night option for the weekends:

“Dear PoP,

I just saw that U Wine & Beer is boarded up. I was there last weekend like 4 times and I didn’t see any sign that it would be closed for any reason, so this is a bit of a shock. Can you or any readers shed any light on this?”

Early Friday morning there was a fire tweeted by @dcfireems:

“2 Alarm fire – 1351 U St NW- U Wine & Beer – fire under control – no inj – significant damage”

I stopped by this weekend to see how they were doing (the owners are truly among the nicest people you will ever meet.) Fortunately, while there was clearly a lot of damage it looks a lot worse than it really is. All of the refrigerators were still working and a lot of the cleanup will be cosmetic. They expect the store to be closed for approximately 2-3 weeks while the repairs are made.

In the meantime, starting Tuesday at 4pm, there will be a fire sale of discounted beer and wine. You’ll see signs out front of 1351 U St, NW that will guide you to the alley around back where you’ll see dozens of bottles of beer and wine discounted that are just a bit dirty but are perfectly sealed.

UPDATE: Just got word U Wine and Beer denied ABRA permit for their fire sale – so no sale today. Owners are very sorry.

UPDATE2: Sale starts Wed. July 13th 4pm!

The owners also wanted to express their gratitude for all the kindness from residents of the U Street neighborhood.

Tons of readers have been writing in that the old auto repair shop at 11th and V St, NW. Another reader writes that they hear the project planned will have 35 condos. You can see a portfolio here of Ellisdale Development projects.

I’ll be sure to update with photos when construction progresses.

And nearby at 10th and V St, NW – here’s what the old church is looking like:

Walking past the old Boundless Yoga space at 1522 U St, NW I noticed the door open and spoke briefly with a worker who said a new furniture store called Foundry would be opening up in the old lower level space of Boundless Yoga. A google search turns up a quote cited by Borderstan from a press release:

Freeman describes Foundry as “a furniture boutique offering vintage, antique, industrial, reclaimed and repurposed finds for the home.”

Sounds promising. I’ll def. return for photos when they open up.

Thanks to a few readers for sending word that the former Copy Resource Center at 905 U St, NW (next to Dickson Wine Bar) is finally getting renovated. Back in Dec. ’10 I was excited to see for lease signs posted. There’s no question that this section of U Street is quickly becoming prime space. Word on the street is that the building will become apartments/condos but I’ll be sure to update when more info becomes available.

And further down the street on the 1000 block of U St, NW the long vacant space next to Oohhs and Aahhs is getting renovated. Word on the street is that it will become a copy center (I swear I’m not making that up) or possibly a neighborhood development organization. Like above, I will be sure to update when more info becomes available. Again, great to see a long vacant space get fixed up.

Back in April I shared some scuttlebutt saying that a pizza pub from the Hilton brothers (Marvin, Gibson etc.) was coming to the little space behind the 9:30 club. Scuttlebutt was true. I’m happy to share a bit more info from a recent liquor license application:

New Tavern. Neighborhood Pizza place. Live Entertainment, Dancing, DJ, Summer Garden. Seating capacity is 99. Summer Garden capacity is 49. Total Occupancy Load is 148.

Sweet!

Thanks to a reader for sending a link to a Meridian Hill Neighborhood Association story:

Jair Lynch Development Partners, developer of Solea Condominium just a few blocks away, is proposing a 95-unit, 9-story residential building at the corner of 15th and V Street NW. The building, designed by WDG Architecture PLLC, is proposed on a portion of the existing parking lot for the Paul Lawrence Dunbar Apartment Complex which is home to affordable housing for senior citizens.

What do you think of the rendering (the building in the center)?

“Dear PoP,

Just wanted to let you know that Dodge City’s back patio is open [917 U St, NW]. It is two levels and awesome. I went there just the other night and was very impressed. The owner told me that it’s still a work in progress, but it looks great as it is at this point.”

Couple of cool details after the jump. (more…)
