After experiencing serious fire damage back in June 2014, Henry’s Soul Cafe hoped to reopen in 2-3 months. Obviously that was a bit ambitious. But to make matters, as we’ve previously noted, the owner Henry Smith passed away in October 2014. On their facebook page they now say they are hoping to reopen in approximately 60 days. From the photo above you can see there are still some serious repairs needed but hopefully they’ll get them done in a couples months. Updates as we get closer.

From Listen Local First:

“The Bowser Administration has agreed to allow Funk Parade to take place on U Street NW on May 2, 2015, the D.C. Department of Funk announced today. The move reverses the city’s previous stance of prohibiting the closure of U Street NW for any public event, which had been in place for nearly a generation.

“We’re grateful to the city and Mayor Muriel Bowser for acknowledging U Street’s historic significance to the District as the soul of music, culture and celebration, a place that’s unlike anywhere else in the city,” said Justin Rood, co-founder of Funk Parade. The event, including a day fair and evening music festival, takes place from Noon to 10 PM.

“The Funk Parade embodies the best spirit of the District,” said Mayor Bowser. “It brings our communities together and honors the City’s musical heritage that we’ve all come to know and love.”

“We are also grateful for the endorsements from Councilmembers like Brianne Nadeau, our local Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners, community groups, local businesses, and the support of community members, that made this happen,” Rood said. “Thank you for making your voices heard. The city has a heart, and it beats beneath U Street.”

Up to the mid-1990s U Street NW frequently hosted community parades, including former Mayor Marion Barry’s 1979 inaugural parade, a parade to mark the opening of the Metro Green Line station in 1992, and even a parade for home rule in 1964 led by Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. However, for the past 17 years the city has allowed no significant closure of the thoroughfare for a public event. (more…)

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“Noticed this while walking down U between 10th and 11th. This appears to be a chain bagel place but given the shortage of bagels in this city, I’ll take it.”

Lovely Yogurt opened on U Street back in 2012.

NY Bagel’s website says:

“Why Our Bagels Are Great!

First we start with the best possible ingredients, like powdered barley malt, not the less expensive liquid malt or no malt at all, like our competition. The bagels are then allowed to rest for 12 hours on fermentation boards giving them a deep flavor and crust. After the 12 hours, our bagels are ready for kettle boiling. The bagels are then hearth baked creating a true NY style bagel that is crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside.”

You can see their menu here.

Anyone ever eaten at one?

“Dear PoPville,

I have lived in LeDroit for almost 8 years and have been by this building hundreds of times and have never seen a person go in or out. What is this place? Is it a real agency?”

District of Columbia Housing Finance Agency is for real:

“The HFA was established in 1979 to stimulate and expand homeownership and rental housing opportunities in Washington, D.C. We accomplish our mission by issuing mortgage revenue bonds that lower the homebuyers’ costs of purchasing homes and the developers’ costs of acquiring, constructing and rehabilitating rental housing. We embrace our responsibility with conviction and pledge our best efforts to serve as the city’s champion for homeowners and renters and to act as the city’s principal catalyst for neighborhood investment.”

Anyone ever interact with them through the DC Opens Doors or other programs?

From an email:

“Marvin [2007 14th St, NW], the Washington D.C. bistro and bar inspired by the transformative time D.C. native Marvin Gaye spent in Belgium, announces it’s 2015 Marvin Gaye Day celebration, marking what would have been the 76th birthday of the legendary singer.

The 8th annual Marvin Gaye Day celebration begins at 2pm on Thursday, April 2nd headlined with a performance by Gaye’s original band, The Marquees, a Marvin tradition since 2008. Joining them is soul singer Maimouna Youssef, who will perform a rousing tribute to Gaye and Tammi Terrell — Gaye’s duet partner on seven Top 40 singles including “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “You’re All I Need To Get By”. DJ Jaz Dux will spin Marvin Gaye and Motown’s greatest hits from 3pm-6pm and DJ Keenan Orr will take over after The Marquees play until closing.

Documentaries about Marvin Gaye will play continually throughout the day while neighboring vinyl shop, Som Records hosts a “Hitsville Pop-up Shop” at Marvin selling the best vinyl from the 1960s to the early 1980s from 2pm-close.

Marvin’s main dining room will also open at 2pm to accommodate guests for lunch and dinner, offering their full dinner menu. On the rooftop deck, happy hour specials will be available from 2pm-6pm including $4 Stella drafts, $5 rail cocktails, $6 wine by the glass and Absolut flavor cocktails, $9 house smoked baby back ribs, $6 mushroom croquettes and chicken fried oysters, and $4 frites.

In keeping with tradition, all proceeds from the day’s events will benefit The Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, the beneficiary chosen by the Gaye family, and given in Marvin Gaye’s name.”
