Follow up to Friday’s Dress Code Discussion at Masa 14.

From Masa 14:

“We apologize for the confusion around the dress code requirement at Masa 14. There has never been a required dress code for any meal service at our restaurant. This includes brunch and dinner. We welcome our guests to dress comfortably and any dress code requirements may only be applicable to our late night hours of operations.

Most importantly, the language used within the sign does not represent or reflect upon the restaurant’s principles. Please know that the sign has been removed, and we apologize about any unintended harm that this has caused. We are upset about this misrepresentation and would like to reiterate that we are committed to our values of inclusiveness. We have taken corrective action and we hold ourselves to a higher standard than what was represented in this sign.

At Masa 14 we value every guest, and will see to it that we continue to be a welcomed member in the community.”

If you have a photo of a neat find from your house or place of work please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail.com thanks. To those who have I sent – I promise I’m working through the queue!

“Unearthed as part of the renovations of my U St row house. Based some internet research, the soda was named after James E. Crass, an early Coca-Cola franchisee, so at least there’s a reason for the odd name.”

cafe st ex bricks falling
14th and T Street, NW

From an email:

“On Saturday evening, March 21, 2015 around 5pm, a section of brick fell off of the upper facing of the building that houses Cafe Saint-Ex on 14th St NW. The cause of the incident is unknown, and thankfully no one was injured.

Representatives from DCRA were on site shortly after the event to inspect the area and removed any remaining loose bricks. They determined that the building is secure and cordoned off the corner of 14th & T Streets as a safety precaution. The restaurant reopened at 10pm that same night, using a side door along T Street as its entrance.

The building’s owner, Ron Renchard, is working with officials to erect scaffolding in front of the building for a full inspection.

The owners & staff of Cafe Saint-Ex take the safety of our guests very seriously and will continue to work closely with our landlord to ensure the building remains secure.”

Last week a reader noted that Black and Orange burgers had closed at 14th and U St, NW. A number of commenters and twitter followers wrote that it still looked open. On Saturday Charles wrote:

“I just ate at the 14th and U location last night… There were also no signs that it was going to shut down in any way”

Last week I also noted that Black and Orange’s phone was disconnected and their website was down. Another subtle sign that Black and Orange is no more:

So I stopped by on Sunday to see what was up. Though they were closed at the time – it appears we have a name change going on:

Bo$$ Burger & Breakfast it is.  Or soon will be.

@dcprintchick tweeted us Saturday around 4:30pm:

“@PoPville Huge chunk of brick @ top of St Ex bldg just crashed down. Giant noise; no injuries but beware sidewalk!”

@AbingdonSciGuy also tweeted us yesterday:

“@PoPville I saw (and heard) this earlier… The people below were very lucky.”

I stopped this morning and was told St. Ex has reopened but the front entrance obviously remains cordoned off so enter through the side.

“Dear PoPville,

We live near 14th and T, and we had a strange solicitation Monday night that was a bit disconcerting. Shortly after 11pm, a woman rang our doorbell. When we asked who it was, the woman said, “I’d like to say a prayer for your business.” We said, “We’re not interested,” and she left. Immediately afterwards, I heard a car speed off, though that could be coincidental. My husband went outside to see if she’d left anything or if she was knocking on a neighbor’s door, but she was gone.

Obviously, our home is in no way related to a place of business, so this is perplexing. We are wondering whether anyone else has encountered this woman, and if so, has there been any follow up incident? We can’t make heads or tails of it, and we are wondering whether to be concerned in any way.”

A tantalizing comment from yesterday’s Shaw’s Day of Greatness discussion:

“Your wish is about to be granted… Over 50,000 sf of Foods fit for the Whole neighborhood just north of V Street… expect an official announcement VERY soon. The poster below is spot on with location [965 Florida Ave, NW] but the opening will be sooner than 4 yrs…”

Ed. Note: This was the once hoped for Harris Teeter location. If everything is green lighted, how long do you think it would take to get this from vacant lot to new building?

And nearby @DCITYstyle tweets us the below great photo next door to the 9:30 club:

“A little morning tour of North End Shaw’s newest apt @ATLPLUMBINGDC.”
