cone

A reader reports:

“On Sunday, I saw an orange rubber cone was stuck on the tracks at the U Street metro (going in the direction of Branch Avenue). I’ve attached a picture. On Sunday (9/13) at 6:30pm, I reported the cone to the station manager because I was worried that it would catch fire or get a train jammed. It’s now Tuesday and the orange cone is still there in the tracks. The attached picture was taken 10 mins ago. For some reason, this reminds me of when a doctor leaves a sponge in the patient’s body…. The metro repair workers just left a big orange cone laying in the middle of the train tracks! If nothing else, it’s symptomatic of a lack of care and irresponsibility.”

Dean Clark tweets us:

“@PoPville Was at Stetson’s last night. Told the sale went through and they are closing end of September October. No word on replacement.”

Back in June we posted the devastating news, for some, that Stetson’s was for sale. At that time some protested vociferously that this was simply not true and I was told by many, many people on twitter that I was idiot (and worse.) As I said originally I love Stetson’s. I and my friends spent much of our 20s here – with nothing but fond memories, from what I can remember. It genuinely pains me to pass on news of the sale. There is now a leasing flyer from Douglas Development:

Updates when an exact closing date is known. All I can say is – I am sad.

Back in May we learned that Indulj open since 2009 (Duke City before that) had closed. I hear Amsterdam Cafe and Lounge is ready to open in the space on Monday. If anyone stops by let us know what you think. This is on the same block where The Prospect sports bar opened in the former Ulah Bistro space. Anyone check out The Prospect this weekend?

The Prospect sports bar opens in the former Ulah Bistro space tomorrow. Their facebook page says:

“The Prospect channels sporting themes collaged through color and texture with a juxtaposition of vintage, modern, gritty, and unorthodox sports memorabilia

Ed. Note: RIP Momo’s sports bar

The grand opening announcement says:

“We are proud to announce the opening of our newest venture, The Prospect, a vintage twist on the modern sports bar. The Grand Opening will be on Saturday, September 12th and Sunday September 13th, just in time for the NFL season kickoff! We will have a sneak peak (soft opening) on Thursday, September 10th and Friday, September 11th to work out any last minute kinks.

A reader reports:

“The amazing Miles Davis mural on the back of Bohemian Caverns has been painted over, all in purple. I’m devastated. Loved that hornblower’s silhouette. There are a bunch of black line drawing outlines that weren’t there yesterday. Guess it was an artistic decision? I really miss that horn player silhouette though!”

Ed. Note: The 1500 block of U Street was previously home to numerous vintage/clothing shops but continues to dwindle in recent years.

Thanks to a reader for passing on from Lettie Gooch:

Ed. Note: Back in the day this space was once planned for a spot called Local 14 then a planned pizza restaurant by Edan Macquaid and most recently an Art Soiree House.
