Whew.

From a press release:

“Since opening it’s door in October 2013, DCity Smokehouse has become the go-to location for great DC-centric BBQ. Now the loved restaurant prepares for it’s next stage as chef Rob Sonderman steps down and a new pit master is named.

DCity Smokehouse’s parent company Southeast Restaurant Group is pleased to announce Shawn McWhirter as the new lead pit master. Shawn hails from Hill Country and has been known as the all-important guy behind the smoker since DCity’s inception.

“Rob Sonderman has been a great asset to DCity Smokehouse and we wish him the best as his next endeavor,” says Scott Jacobs, SERG co-owner. “Furthermore, this is an exciting time for us as we name Shawn McWhirter as our new lead pit master. Shawn has played in important role as part of our “Brisket Squad” for more than two years and we’re looking forward to having him and the rest of the team continue to deliver great BBQ to our beloved neighbors far and wide. DCity Smokehouse fans can expect the same great food integrity they have always loved.”

wicked bloom
Wicked Bloom, 1540 North Capitol Street, NW

A reader reports:

“I guess DCity permanently closed the FL Ave location on Christmas Eve (I just discovered this when I went to look at the menu online). According to its twitter account [“we OPEN back up, Monday January 11th in our new POP Up spot at 1540 North Capitol St NW”], it sounds like it is re-opening as a pop-up in Wicked Bloom (obviously affiliated) on Jan. 11. It is not clear when it will be moving permanently to the new location though.”

truxton_circle

Truxton Circle Roadwork

“Does anyone know what’s up with the roadwork on the Unit and 100 Blocks of O and P Sts NW in Truxton Circle? It’s been going on for months, and in between bouts of activity, the roads are left in nearly impassable condition.

I know there was a water main replacement project that required tearing up the road. However, that was completed months ago.

I came to the realization over the weekend that this is the new normal for these blocks. Unpredictable parking restrictions, loud construction, driving on the wrong side of the road to avoid the gaping holes. Clearly this should NOT be the normal.

Does any one know what the objective of this project is and when it might come to completion?”

west-arrested

From Metro Transit Police:

“Metro Transit Police have arrested the man wanted for assaulting a Metrobus operator on November 6, 2015.

Darren Lowell WEST, Jr., 20, of Northwest DC turned himself in to the Metro Transit Police warrant squad yesterday and was arrested without incident. Subsequently, West admitted to punching the bus operator because he was “angry.”

The incident occurred on the 92 route while the bus was servicing the bus stop at North Capitol and P streets NW. The suspect walked past the bus operator without paying. When the bus operator requested the fare, the suspect walked to the front of the bus and, without warning or provocation, punched the operator multiple times in the face with a closed fist. A passenger aboard the bus, acting as a Good Samaritan, had to physically pull West off of the operator and force him off the bus.

The operator was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and was released.

MTPD released images of the suspect within hours of the incident and sought the public’s assistance to identify him. Media coverage and public tips were instrumental in obtaining an arrest warrant for West.

West will face assault charges in the District of Columbia where, under DC law, assault on a bus operator could carry an enhanced penalty at sentencing.”

A reader reports Sunday afternoon:

“I came across 4 dead chickens and a cluster of sage wrapped in a red ribbon with a note in the 100 block of N St. NW right across from Dunbar High School. It is by a tree outside of the fence to the softball field in the New York Ave playground. The attached photos are not of the best quality but they show the chickens with the red ribbon wrapped sage bundle in background and then a close up of the note. We found the whole thing to be very disturbing and creepy.”

The authorities have been contacted and the case is being investigated. Graphic photo after the jump
