Chef Vallcorba at ANXO Pop up Crane and Turtle - Skeiky

From a press release:

“Chef Alex Vallcorba, who has been working with the ANXO team since its first pop-up back in July of 2015, has become ANXO’s Executive Chef.

Alex Vallcorba was born and raised in Barcelona, Spain and has been passionate about Basque culture since childhood. Vallcorba isn’t new to DC; he has cooked at Obelisk, Black Salt, 2 Amys, and served as Hank’s Oyster Bar’s Chef. In between kitchen jobs in DC, he lived and worked in Basque Country for six months, cooking at Assador Etxebarri: a Michelin-starred restaurant specializing in wood grilling. This experience reflects Vallcorba’s love of ingredient-driven, rustic cooking.

This change comes about as Chef Brad Walker departs from the ANXO team. From Chef Walker:

“I have come to the difficult decision to part ways with ANXO. I absolutely wish them the best of luck in their efforts and look forward to the opening.” (more…)

Thanks to all who passed on from gofundme:

“On February 24, Zack and I experienced most people’s worst nightmare. We were evacuated from our home on a few moments’ notice for our own safety. Within an hour, we were alerted to the terrifying fact that we would never live their again, and many of our possessions had been destroyed. The middle section of the three-story building where five of us had been living collapsed from negligent construction nextdoor.

We have now been informed that the city of DC will conduct a piecemeal demolition of our home, and we will only be able to salvage priceless items. Not only are we homeless and possessionless, but we feel emotionally and physically destroyed. I know some people feel these fund sites are tacky, but this is what the are designed for–to help people in crisis. We are fighting tooth-and-nail with the insurance companies…but they are not quick to offer up cash to assist in things like food, toiletries, transportation, and putting a deposit down on a new apartment. We thank everyone for their support and I can honestly tell you I have never felt more defeated in my adult life.”

Billy tweets us around 9:45 last night:

“Just watched house across from me partially collapse. Woah. #DC @PoPville unit block of Q St NW”

and another reader sends video via email:

“So this happened on the unit block of Q st nw tonight. There’s construction happening on the lot next to this apartment building and clearly something went wrong while digging the basement. They haven’t worked on the building since Monday.”

Watch video of the collapse after the jump. (more…)

For a minute this was going to become a bar called Seven Faces but that fell through a while ago. Updates as they get closer to opening. They’ll be located right next door the the excellent Meats & Foods.

From an email:

“Studio Upwall Architects partnered with two developers, Flywheel Development, and Urban Green LLC, in response to an RFP issued by the Deputy Mayor’s Office for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) for a City-owned lot at North Capitol and Bates Streets in NW DC.

Truxton (PDF)

This RFP was issued as one of 4 sites in the “March Madness” round in early 2015. Our team’s concept, “Cyclehouse” proposed 15 units of affordable housing with a ground floor restaurant from Jaime Vargas, owner of San Antonio Grill in Brookland. The building would be designed to achieve Net Zero Energy use.

I’m happy to say that full ANC 5E voted to support a resolution in support of our bid Tuesday evening. In the run-up to the ANC vote we received unanimous support in a vote from the local civic association and a large majority of the votes at the single member ANC 5E-05 meeting.

Our design includes: (more…)

Unit block of N Street, NW

We’ve spoken about these in the past because I freaking love this award. Once a commenter said these were installed so the road couldn’t be used as an escape route for criminal (drug dealing?) purposes. Bottom line is – I love this sign.
