Capital Checkers, 9th and S Street, NW

Ed. Note: I’ve been concerned this might happen here since 2015.

“Capital Checkers was founded in 1985 by a group of dedicated players looking to create a more formal community. As DC has evolved, so has the organization. But some things never change: our commitment to the community, our passion for the game, and our friendships with each other.”

From an email:

“After 40 years as a DC cultural institution, Capital Checkers will soon be forced to close its doors in Shaw. Long time renters at 815 S St NW, the landlord has decided to sell the property and the club must leave by the end of March! (more…)

Full disclosure: I drank a lot of these masterpieces. A LOT.

Allow me to introduce you to All-Purpose Shaw’s new freezer cocktails:

“They’re individually-sized, pre-bottled versions of our favorite cocktails that can be stored in the freezer and are ready to drink whenever. The current selection includes (more…)

Thanks to Lisa for sharing yesterday:

“This is peak dog owner shaming and I applaud it! This note and big bag of poop was left at the front door of my condo bldg today by an angry rowhouse neighbor. To all dog owners – Be kind & be responsible!”

2225 Georgia Avenue, NW

A reader reports around 9:15am this morning:

“Car accident near Howard Barnes & Noble. Walked past a bit late and first responders were on the scene. Looks like a metrobus may have been involved because it was also stopped with flashers on. Nearly witnessed another accident when some idiot in an SUV started honking and went in to head on traffic to get around the bus!”

1316 9th Street, NW

From an email:

“In an effort to help out those who are suffering through the Texas cold-weather catastrophe, Chef Massimo Fabbri is announcing that he is donating 100% of the revenue from all meals (Dine-In and Pick-Up) on Thursday, February 25th and Friday, February 26th to the DAWA Fund in Austin, TX. 9th and T Street, NW

Thanks to Kristin for sending earlier this afternoon: “FYI- dogs are being electrocuted by a pepco manhole on 9th and T St. Please avoid walking over manholes with your dogs during these snowy/icy/salty conditions. Last night, a dog was shocked while walking on it and was in an almost paralyzed state for a few minutes. We put a sign over it and called 311. Firefighters are here now roping off the area.”
