Update: “The Urban Grape DC’s Grand Opening has just been postponed due to unforeseen permitting delays.” Will post new date when available.

From an email:

The Urban Grape, one of the country’s most successful independently-owned wine stores, will open in Washington, D.C. and host complimentary tastings with diverse beverage makers during Martin Luther King Jr. weekend (see schedule below). Located at 1301 9th Street, NW at N Street, in the historic Shaw neighborhood, the new store is TJ and Hadley Douglas’ first expansion outside of Boston since they founded The Urban Grape in 2010. The new, 4,352-square-foot store offers more than 800 bottles from 25 different countries presented in an iconic “wine wall,” an enormous, locally milled tasting table and a separate, dedicated space for corporate and community events. Delivery is available within the metro area. Read More

From our friends in Shaw (1537 7th Street, NW):

“Ivy and Coney, the preferred dive bar of 4 out of 5 shickers, is elated to celebrate Hanukkah with all of you again! Beginning Friday, December 1st through the end of the month, the Manischewitz shall flow, the dreidels shall spin, and fun will be had by most. The really fun part with fire gets going the evening of the 7th and continues on every night until the 14th. Yes, there will be presents.

As always, we’ll be donating all proceeds from the sale of kosher wine to HIAS for their work helping refugees across the globe. We hope everyone will join us in throwing down some serious gelt to support this vital cause.

To properly honor the least important holiday on the calendar, one where you both get to play with fire and drink dubiously colored wine, we’ve got delicious latkes, sufgani-shots (jelly donuts in shot form), and Manischewitz. Latkes, arguably the most important culinary creation since unleavened bread, will feature prominently as a reminder of the oil used to light the menorah, and the fact that fried foods truly are the tastiest. Each night we will be lighting the Hanukiyah at approximately 7:00 PM (December 7th through December 14th) and invite our guests to participate. Who knows, you may even find a present in your hands at the end of the night.

“Dear PoPville,

When 9th Street was restriped/redone a couple of years ago, near the Convention Center at K/New York Avenue the lanes south shifted, creating a parking area for cars/taxis at L Street by the Marriott Marquis. Previously, there was a taxi stand/waiting area at the corner of K Street, but that was eliminated as it was blocking traffic going south and creating a bottleneck. Then, sometime later a new sign was added, putting the taxi stand back, which to no surprise, again created a bottleneck that was, during rush hour blocks long as two lanes needed to merge to one specifically and only because of the location of the taxi stand. I noticed this week those signs were again eliminated and only the no parking sign (pictured) was present, but that cones from the construction across the street were put in place, blocking a lane, plus taxi cabs are parking where this sign is, illegally. From an email:

“Pierre Ajaj and Philip Stone, two chefs of the popular Just Jerk in Lanham MD have opened up the new falafel joint at the busy 9th & U area.

Located directly across from Atlantis and 9:30 Club (the old Andy’s Pizza spot), Falafel Brothers features their take on the popular wrap. The menu is simple, with four separate falafel choices plus the “create your own option.”
