Thanks to a reader for sending word that Mandalay wasn’t open for diner last night:

Mandalay only had a one day preview night last week — not a grand opening and are not open for regular service yet.”

The OP who originally sent word writes:

“I talked with someone at the Silver Spring Mandalay location, and he said that they are “aiming for the 17th” for an official opening date for the DC location. They’re still processing paperwork that will allow them to open full-time.”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to let you know how thrilled I am that shaws tavern has lowered their beer prices down to a reasonable level. I know dc is expensive and I’m not one to complain about it, but when I saw shaws beer prices were way out of line with similar locales, it pissed me off.

So, I am so excited that their prices are good now, and happy hour draft beers are still $2 off!

I specifically remember that Boston lager was $7, magic hat was $9, and pbr was $5. Now they are all cheaper!”

Last month we learned Ivy and Coney:

““Opening in Fall 2013, Ivy and Coney will be a small, neighborhood bar located at 1537 7th St NW in the Shaw neighborhood in Washington, D.C. It brings the atmosphere of a Chicago corner bar with Detroit prices and Midwestern hospitality to our ever-diverse capital. The spot comes from Kangaroo Boxing Club owners Josh Saltzman and Chris Powers (originally from Chicago and Detroit), bartender Adam Fry (Chicago) and native Washingtonian, Jamie Hess.

The menu includes Chicago-style and Detroit Coney-style hot dogs, Chicago Italian beefs, peanuts, and cracker jacks. The beers will include Strohs, Old Style, Goose Island 312, and Bell’s Two Hearted along with a quality selection of spirits and sodas.”

They’ve now applied for a liquor license with an occupancy load of 60. Hours will be Sunday through Thursday 10 am – 2 am, Friday and Saturday 10 am – 3 am. You can catch more updates on their facebook page here.

“Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to let you know that Mandalay (the amazing Burmese restaurant in Silver Spring) is opening its new Shaw location (1501 9th Street NW) on Sunday!

Mandalay will be celebrating its opening day with five sittings that will be a fixed meal for $25 cash (they’re not sure whether their credit card machines will be up and running by then). As of this morning, only the 11am, 1pm, and 8:30pm seating still have openings.

Reservations can be made through a link on Mandalay’s website.

The system for making a reservation is a bit complicated and involves clicking on a link next to the specific seating time you’re interested in and logging in using an event ID and password (both of which are provided next to the link on the website).

If anyone in the party has dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, pescetarian), there are a series of Google Drive documents where you can enter your preference.”

A reader sends an account they witnessed Friday night:

“I am sitting at Shaw’s Tavern and a man just tried to steal a bike next to Bistro Boheme. The bike owner ran out of his house and attacked the attempted robber. Beat him to the ground and put him in a choke hold. The police didn’t come for 8 minutes. A few guys tried to get him to stop, but he told them to f$&@ off. The police responded and had to restrain the attempted robber from attacking the bike owner. The attempted robber is being questioned and the bike owner is being examined by EMTs.”

“Dear PoPville,

Any idea what’s happening at the empty lot at appx 1234 10th street? Neighbors had been using it as an informal dog park, but I see there’s construction starting there.”

Looks like it’s going to be a new “three story two-unit duplex” from Suzane Reatig Architecture. You can see her previous projects here.

A couple weeks ago we admired tbe new copper windows at Baby Wale coming to 1124 9th Street, NW by the convention center. EaterDC shares the word that they are opening up to the public next week:

“Menu items at Baby Wale will range from the lobster roll to the pupusa. Power says he sees the place as a bar with a focus on food and wine. He’s working on a roast chicken for two that will be a bigger version of Corduroy’s roast chicken dish. There will be soups, salads and other dishes (a crispy salmon with refried black beans is in the works).”
