9th and L St, NW

A reader reports on one of the last blighted corners near the Convention Center:

“Construction fencing has been erected around the Marriott Development project at 9th & L Sts NW. A surveyor team was on site too. Can’t wait to see this site developed.”

Capstone Development previously posted:

“Capstone, along with its partner Quadrangle Development, is currently developing a mixed use project on a site located at 9th Street NW and L Street NW. The $230 million project includes a 310-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel, a 190-room Residence Inn by Marriott hotel, and 230 residential units. The project is located in the Shaw Historic district and includes the redevelopment of a number of historic buildings located along 9th Street NW. Capstone recently completed the PUD process and is currently overseeing the design and financing of the project, which is projected to break ground in 2015.”

Cooper Carry adds:

“In addition, the Lurgen, an historic apartment building on L Street will be completed renovated and repositioned and finally, a civil war era home will be relocated along L Street approximately 30 feet in order to maximize its potential within the design. The project will be supported with two levels of underground parking. Approximately 3,000 GSF of ground floor retail will be placed in three of the townhomes.”

The projected breaking ground was a bit off but check out the renderings: (more…)

Ivy Charity Gala

Reminder from Ivy & Coney:

“Hey Norm! If you could spend $100 to raise $15,000 for Bread for The City would you do it? I would! I’d dig up my grandpa’s tux or my old prom dress and crush hot dogs like Kobayashi! On April 14th Ivy and Coney (1537 7th St, NW) gets fancy for charity and so can you! For a single crisp Benjamin you get all you can eat and drink from 7 – 11pm while supporting a great cause. Because where else can you throw back Strohs and toss peanut shells on the floor in an evening gown? Even better, you get to do all this on our brand new roof deck! No worries if you don’t have your own formal wear, a super fancy tuxedo t-shirt is included in the price! To help Bread for the City in their mission to fight poverty by providing food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services, Ivy and Coney will donate 100% of event proceeds as well as 100% of tips to charity. We are also teaming up with Goose Island, Pernod Ricard, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Miller-Coors, Cogito Ergo Saute and others for some great silent auction items.

Grab tickets here while they last! If you cannot make the event but would still like to support Bread for the City or learn more about their mission, please visit them here.”

From DDOT:

“Beginning Monday, April 11, 2016, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will begin operation and enforcement of the Georgia Avenue NW Dedicated Bus Lanes from Florida Avenue to Barry Place, NW. The dedicated bus lanes will be in effect Mondays to Saturdays, between 7 am and 10 pm.

The following vehicles will be allowed to travel along the bus lanes: transit buses, tour buses, charter buses, school buses, active passenger service taxicabs, bicycles (not pedicabs), paratransit service vehicles and authorized emergency vehicles.

Driving in bus lanes is prohibited for all other motorists, unless they are making turns at intersections or driveways. When making turns, motorists are allowed to enter the bus lane 40 feet prior to turning. Parking is also restricted while the bus lanes are in operation.

A red, high friction surfacing will be added to the Georgia Avenue NW Dedicated Bus Lanes in late spring 2016 to further identify them; however, bus lanes will officially be active and regulated starting next Monday, April 11.

Signage consistent with the operation of these bus lanes will be posted along the corridor.

Motorists are urged to follow new traffic patterns and adhere to bus lane regulations as fines will be imposed for failure to obey bus lane regulations.”

Kandi-EntinFINAL

“Dear PoPville,

Our neighbors in Shaw lost their beautiful baby girl Kandi last year. Another neighbor has started a page to raise funds to help her mother and grandmother cover her medical and funeral expenses (Kandi spent most of her 6 short months on earth in the hospital, surrounded by loving family).

“Angela and her daughter Tyelynn are our neighbors, and they have been members of the Marion St. community for over 20 years. They are amazing neighbors who are always quick to bring over food, share a smile, and make you feel good. We would like to help them in their time of need.

Tyelynn gave birth to Kandi in June 2015. Unfortunately, Kandi suffered from a prenatal condition and had to remain in neonatal intensive care unit for months. Although Kandi spent the majority of her life in the hospital, her mother and her grandmother Angela visited her constantly and showered her with love. Sadly, Kandi passed away in December leaving Tyelynn and Angela devastated.

The money raised from this fundraiser will go toward helping Angela and Tyelynn pay for Kandi’s medical and funeral expenses. Please considering helping them in any way you can.”

You can donate here.”

A reader reports:

“This house is at the corner of 4th and R NW and has been vacant for a year or so, and the porch is often occupied by squatters. A development group bought it a few months ago and I guess are in the “discovery” phase of planning. A couple weeks ago, we woke up to find this inventive structure. For a moment we thought some resourceful squatters built a home, but then thought “who has doors to spare?” The developer’s squatter barricade has been an effective defense so far.”
