From Dino’s Grotto:

Benefit for Fabian Malone

Tuesday October 10 at Dino’s Grotto

5pm ’til close!

Fabian Malone has been a part of the Dino and Dino’s Grotto family for almost 5 years. When our Bar Manager at the time decided to leave, Fabian happened to walk in and apply for a job. His personality plus his drink making skill led to my offering him a job on the spot! Perhaps that drink making skill had something to do with my decision!!

When we opened the Grotto, Fabian was a key element of our team. And even when he left the Grotto to pursue other opportunities, he remained close and often filled in when we needed help. This year, he rejoined us on a part time basis and we are glad to have him back.

One recent evening, when he was walking home, he was accosted by a group who demanded money. Fabian didn’t have any to hand over and one of the men shot him in the arm, twice. We learned of this in true Fabian fashion, via HIS Facebook post. He posted again on Facebook after his surgery and on his release! He is that kind of guy: nothing gets in his way!

Unfortunately, the challenges he faces now include an inability to work as well as medical and other expenses. So we are trying to help Fabian so he can keep moving on in life. Tuesday, October 10, we will be holding a fund raiser for Fabian. Here is how you can help:
Come to the Grotto Tuesday October 10 from 5 ’til close. We will donate 33% of all our liquor, beer and wine sales that night if you dine upstairs or in the Grotto Bar. (more…)

Thanks to a parent, Andrew, for sending:

“Around 8:30 am this morning, while scores of children were walking into school, a car jumped the curb and crashed into the side of Garrison Elementary on S Street between 12th and 13th. (The driver apparently had a seizure and was taken away by ambulance.)

Nobody was injured, and there doesn’t appear to be any structural damage to the newly-renovated school, but the incident highlighted how risky S Street is and why the city needs to take fast action to protect kids going to and from school. (Parents have taken to calling it the S Street speedway.) (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I recently learned that Satellite Room is changing their menu (and seemingly their entire “diner” concept) to feature pizza (apparently it will soon be just pizza, wings, and shakes). Allegedly the switch will happen in the next few weeks.”

Ed. Note: I spoke with one of the owners who confirmed they were dropping the diner concept and switching up to focus mainly on pizza (including by the slice and a gluten free option) and wings (as early as today or tomorrow.) He also said the beer program would be expanded significantly with 20 beers now on tap (from Atlas to 3 Stars, to Flying Dog to Modelo to Right Proper to Evo to Bell’s to Ballast Point to DC Brau, ANXO and PBR of course (and more). Bye bye burgers and tots but boozy milkshakes (and salads) shall remain thank the Gods.

Also of note, there will be DJ’s playing on weekends and a boatload of tv’s have been added.

As the world turns…. Satellite Room opened up back in 2012 behind the 9:30 club.

UPDATE: Thanks to a reader for sharing a GoFundMe page for Fabian:

“On the early morning of October 1st on Q street in Washington DC Fabian was walking home from work and was approached by two young men. They held him up for money. Fabian refused and one of the men drew a gun and shot at him twice. One of the bullets entered his forearm it traveled up thru his arm and out his bicep shredding the muscles and damaging the nerves in his arm. A bystander immediately called 911 and he was quickly rushed to Howard University Hospital where he is receiving excellent care. He is so lucky to have cat like reflexes. If he had not raised his arm in defense the bullet would have entered his chest and likely killed him. We all know Fabian as our favorite RONIN Bartender and he needs our help. He does not have health insurance and will not be able to get back to work for the foreseeable future. While still receiving treatment at the hospital the bills are piling up. Please donate to help Fabian today!”

End/Beginning of an era. Log Cabin Liquors was listed for sale back in November 2016. I peeked in the door and there has been a total renovation. Long gone are the bulletproof glass dividers. Updates as they get closer to opening. End/Beginning of an era for sure.

I hardly knew ya! Steven Alan opened up in The Shay back in November 2015. Thanks to Corey for sending last week:

“I saw that the Steven Alan in the Shay was having a ‘Store Closing’ sale with up to 50% off. Never really had a ton of business, so I guess it makes sense.”
