“-Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announced an arrest has been made in the fatal shooting which occurred in the 700 block of Fairmont Street, NW.

On Thursday, July 4, 2013 at approximately 11:29 pm, patrol officers from the Third District responded to the 700 block of Fairmont Street, NW for the report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they located a male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The decedent is identified as 22 year-old Omar Sykes of Northwest, Washington, DC.

On Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at approximately 9:45 am, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 26 year-old Rasdavid Lagarde of Northeast, Washington, D.C. He was charged with First Degree Felony Murder While Armed in the shooting death of Omar Sykes.”

“The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a shooting death this morning where the victim was found in the 2900 block of Sherman Avenue, Northwest.

From CM Jim Graham:

“I have very sad news. A Latino juvenile was pronounced dead from gunshot last might at Washington Hospital Center. He was taken in a private vehicle to hospital from the vicinity of Columbia Road and Sherman Avenue.

We have confirmed that very recently was committed as a ward to the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services. He had a pass to visit that area.

According to MPD, there was no recorded shot spotter reports or complaints of gunshots in this area.

Much more needs to be known about this. I am advised that the car and driver are known to MPD.

For now, our most sincere sympathy goes to his family and friends.”

“At approximately 1130 pm last night, Third District officers were called to the 700 block of Fairmont Street for a shooting. Once on the scene, officers found an adult male suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The male was transported to a local area hospital were he succumb to his injury. Further investigation revealed that there may have been some type of argument or struggle in the middle of that block possibly that led to this shooting. If anyone has any information related to this event, you are encouraged to call (202) 727-9099.”

Update from the Washington Post:

The fatally wounded student, 22-year-old Omar Sykes of Northwest Washington, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, according to Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Officer Araz Alali.

A police sergeant would not comment on the alleged motive for the shooting.

Update from Council Member Jim Graham:

“My information from MPD indicates that it may have been a robbery that resulted ultimately in this death. A gun may have accidentally fired during that robbery and beating. There is a witness, and there may be video evidence as well.”
