Thanks to Susan for sending a sad update on the legendary Evelyn Y. Davis, who’s tombstone is in Rock Creek Church cemetery in Petworth. “Queen of the Corporate Jungle. 1929 – Forever”

The New York Times reported yesterday:

“Evelyn Y. Davis, who spent more than 50 years haranguing American executives at shareholder meetings as she pushed companies to be more frugal and transparent, died on Sunday in Washington. She was 89.”

Unfortunately I can’t find my other old photos but Atlas Obscura has some good shots and writes:

“The notorious gadfly decided to erect her own postmortem monument in 1981 to celebrate her successes. She used the tombstone to list her resume, divorces (there are four, two of which were etched in at later dates), and the fact that she never had children. One of the accompanying stones contains a quote that clearly sums up her philosophy on life: “Power is greater than love, and I did not get where I am by standing in line nor by being shy.”

Ed. Note: Gore Vidal, Tim Russert, a Prime Minister and a Princess are buried in this cemetery among other notables.

“Dear PoPville,

We have continuous accidents at the corner of Arkansas and Iowa Ave, NW. My roommate has a broken leg from someone who hit him and another previous accident here had three people laying in the grass for about 30 minutes until the ambulance came. This one (photo above) happened Friday night. But, the city doesn’t want to put lights in because it’s an emergency corridor for vehicles. Well, how about all of the emergencies that are happening as a result of not putting lights in? I held a little girl in my arms tonight who was so upset. Enough is enough. This is a problem and we need to fix it.”

“Dear PoPville,

We haven’t been able to find much information on this so I’m sharing it far and wide for help.

On Saturday afternoon there was major police presence on Upshur between 4th and Illinois. We saw multiple police officers take down a man on the sidewalk. Eventually they took the man away on a stretcher.

Later that evening we stopped to talk to some neighbors on their front porch, right where it happened. The told us that they saw a man and kids (I believe they said grandkids) running up Upshur saying a man was in Grant Circle with a knife trying to hurt them. The neighbors took them in as the man with the knife approached. They were able to lock the door just in time. The man was on their front porch trying to get in as they called the cops. They even mentioned that he threw up on their porch. The police came and arrested him.

This story is way too similar to the awful story from Logan Circle a few weeks back. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Its that time of year again! We are collecting handmade holiday cards for the residents of the Old Soldiers Home/ Armed Forces Retirement home here in DC. If you know an adult, office, child, daycare, or school that would be interested in making holiday cards to bring some joy to these individuals who have spent years or a lifetime in service to all of us, please spread the word and help us hand out a card to every retired soldier we can this holiday season. Last year we handed out over 700 hugely appreciated holiday cards from all over the country. The cards are delivered along with some hugs, singing and lots of holiday cheer. (more…)
