DC Fire and EMS reported at 3:23am:
“Working Fire 4200 block 8th St NW. Heavy fire both floors rear of 2 story attached row house. #DCsBravest have rescued 2 adult patients both being transported with very critical life threatening injuries.
Sadly, #DCsBravest have learned that the 2 victims we transported from the 8th St. NW fire have succumbed to their injuries. Our thoughts & prayers are with their family and friends. 1 firefighter also suffered a minor injury & transported to hospital. 2 displacements. (more…)

“On Monday, January 11, 2021, at approximately 7:25 hours, Officers on routine patrol were flagged down by a food delivery driver in the 3700 block of New Hampshire Avenue NW. The delivery driver had left his running vehicle unattended and it was taken from him with his two-year-old daughter and his four-year-old son aboard. Officers quickly began to look for the children and the car and alert members of the community. Thanks to the combined effort of citizens of the District and MPD, the children were located unharmed and returned to their father along with his vehicle. The Fourth District would like to thank all those community members who reached out to assist us and remind people not to leave your vehicle running unattended.”

It didn’t specifically say why Dr. Thornburgh was retiring, but he was getting up in years and I think had been planning to retire at some point anyway. My guess is that the pandemic probably accelerated that decision.
A veterinarian friend of mine from high school caught COVID-19 at work — fortunately, he recovered fully. I suppose that’s a good reminder that it’s a frontline occupation. (more…)
