From a press release:

“”Chez Billy, the neighborhood French bistro in the heart of Petworth, will begin serving its democratically-designed brunch on Sunday, September 7. Brunch will be served every Sunday from 11am-3pm.

Created by Executive Chef Brendan L’Etoile–and based upon a poll Chez Billy ran in concert with PoPville earlier this summer–the menu highlights traditional French fare, classic brunch items, and vegetarian options. Dishes like Brioche French toast with apple rum-raisin & pecan syrup, croque madame, sweet potato hash, made with piquillo peppers, caramelized onions, smoked paprika, poached eggs and hollandaise and Chez Billy’s famous Royale With Cheese 6oz burger will be available for brunch.

“We love our neighbors in Petworth and wanted to give them a great, no-fuss brunch with amazing food, “ says General Manager, Justin Marshall. “We asked our guests—and then the neighborhood at large via PoPville–to tell us what they wanted, and we received input from hundreds of neighbors. We took the feedback we received very seriously and think everyone will be pleased with what we’ve come up with.”

In addition to the food menu, Chez Billy will offer $15 bottomless mimosas, Petworth’s own Qualia coffee, house-made sodas and of course, an extensive wine menu.

Reservations can be made by calling 202.506.2080.”

“Dear PoPville,

I am sure Soldiers Home Park is a common topic, but haven’t see much on it since moving to the area last year. Has there been any discussion about reopening parts of the park to the public, especially given the new developments happening south of the Children’s Hospital, including the rumor that the reservoir by Howard is going to be opened up and developed into a new public space?

Does anyone know the history and politics around this issue?”

We had a rather contentious discussion about public access to the Soldiers Home grounds back in 2009. Since then a group called Friends of the Old Soldiers Home has been created so you should definitely check them out. There also has been and are planned many events on the property including those in coordination with the great Lincoln’s Cottage. And don’t forget the golf course (though I think prices have gone up a bit)…

“Dear PoPville,

DC government has posted materials about the project here.

The results of a resident survey are available here.

The city has their own spin on it. The city suggests that 80% of respondents want “some” mix “ranging from 10% – 100%”.

Even using the skewed questions (only offering choices at % levels that seem pretty arbitrary), however, 72% of respondents want there to be 1/4 or less affordable housing in the complex.

That’s just a quick glance. There are some upcoming public meetings as well.”

From ANC Rep Vann-Di M. Galloway:

“The Department of General Services will host a follow-up to the August 12th Community Meeting. It will be held on Tuesday, 9 September from 6:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Raymond Recreation Center in the Multipurpose Room on the second floor.

In this meeting we will discuss Program Development for 1125 Spring Road, N.W.”

Alleged incident at Petworth Market just north of metro stop

“Dear PoPville,

Last night, I went into the store around 10:40pm to get some matches. While standing in line, a man behind me slapped me really hard on the ass, and slinked away with a satisfied, perverted grin. I only saw his side profile. He was young, in his mid 20’s, with a curly high top, and light brown skin.

The man behind the glass was laughing so hard. He apologized, saying, “I’m so sorry to laugh, but in my country, nothing like this ever happens, since I’ve been here, I’ve seen so much crazy shit!” He offered to show the video to the police, but I was so damn mad and humiliated that I just wanted to go home.

My friend told me that a lot of these incidences have been happening to women, so I just wanted to let someone know in case this pervert is serially assaulting random women.

If this man would have slapped me in my face with the same vigor, it would be assault no question. But because he slapped me on my ass, it was funny. I was so shocked that it happened, even I had to laugh a bit. What kind of fetish is this? I mean, it wasn’t like child’s play. He slapped me so hard, my ass was stinging all the way home. And that look on his face… I couldn’t sleep last night because I was so upset.”

“My son turned 2 this summer and walked home from a party store near our house with balloons for the party. A few neighbors asked what they were for and my husband invited them to stop over if they could. Two neighbors came by after the party was over each with a card and a gift for my son. I love our block.”

The bookstore will focus on literary fiction and poetry, art books, children’s books and local authors and will be the first stand-alone, independent bookstore selling new books to open in in DC in 20 years.

Upshur Street Books will complement the Reading Room at Petworth Citizen, home to a Free Book Library and a rotating list of literary events.

“I moved into the ‘sketchy’ neighborhood of Petworth three years ago to a row home with two roommates. None of my roommates wanted to go in on a service to mow our lawn (money issues) and I didn’t see the point in buying a lawnmower.

Anyway, I told this to our new neighbors one day after they found me cutting the overgrown grass with hedge clippers, and the next day I come back to see our lawn mowed – free of charge.”

“A few weeks ago my 18th month old son and I were walking home from a trip to the playground at Raymond elementary. On our way home we stopped to say hello to our neighbor, an older woman that often sits on her porch with her dog. My son invited him self up onto her porch to pet her dog and I mentioned it was getting close to snack and nap time for the little guy. To which our neighbor responded that “he probably wants some ice cream”, and promptly went inside and came out with two scoops of butter pecan ice cream in a to-go container “in case he wants it after his nap”.

We live in south Petworth, just north of Spring Rd.”
