Update from CM Allen’s office via OP:

“Thank you again for reaching out to our office. I have spoken with Matt, the Manager at Safeway. He was unaware of the signs, and didn’t know where they came from. He has taken them down, and is looking into why they were put up.”

“Dear PoPville,

This sign was post recently (I saw it yesterday, not sure how long it’s been there) at the Safeway at the Waterfront metro. I am sure this will impact certain racial and social groups disproportionately. I have alerted CM Allen’s office about this, but I hope other neighborhood residents will see this and voice their concerns as well.”

When you rush at the end of a big project, some details inevitably go skittering away from you.

Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 6D/Waterfront is dealing with this inevitability now. The ANC negotiated many agreements which limited hours of operation of bars and restaurants at The Wharf, and now one found that its neighbor is allowed to stay open later and longer.

Specifically, La Vie (88 District Square SW) found that its neighbor The Brighton (949 Water Street) had negotiated an agreement with more desirable opening hours. (See table above for comparison of the two establishment’s settlement agreements.) (more…)

“Following thirteen years of making locally-sourced, seasonal gelato and specialty coffee drinks in DC, Dolcezza’s ninth cafe introduces savory breakfast items and new desserts to its offerings at the Wharf.

Co-owners Robb Duncan and Violeta Edelman aim to create a space that will remain lively throughout the day, to be enjoyed by district locals and visitors alike. “The opening of the Wharf is a game-changer for the DC dining scene,” says Duncan. “We’re excited to have neighbors like Requin, Kaliwa, even The Anthem — and are looking forward to joining the local dining conversation with more options.” Those options include Southern-inspired biscuit sandwiches with fried chicken or eggs and bacon, steak and egg breakfast bowls, huevos rancheros, and more. At its regularly-schedule meeting December 11, Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 6D/Waterfront voted to support a ban on the sale and operation of gas-powered leaf blowers in the District. The vote was unanimous with one abstention.

As reported on PoPville, the bill would outlaw the sale and use of gasoline-powered leaf blowers in the District after January 1, 2022. It was proposed by DC Councilmember Mary Cheh (Ward 3) and championed by advocacy group Quiet Clean DC.

Cheh first proposed the bill in 2016. (more…)

Well-coordinated Lobbying Leads Waterfront ANC to Oppose “The Bard”

Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 6D/Waterfront voted unanimously last night (December 11) to oppose a proposed development, nicknamed “The Bard”, at the former site of Southeastern University at 501 I Street SW. The site is so named because, in addition to proposed residential and retail space, the site is slated to host the administrative space and educational facilities of DC’s Shakespeare Theatre Company.

Since opening its first phase on October 12 of this year, the mixed-use, waterfront neighborhood has hosted various free outdoor concerts and seasonal events such as Pumpkin Palooza and Thanks for Giving. The winter events will begin with the lighting of The Wharf’s 45-foot tall Christmas Tree on District Pier on Friday, Dec. 1 followed by the largest of the five seasonal events, The 26th Annual District Holiday Boat Parade on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. A beloved holiday tradition and a magical night of illuminated boating, over 60 participating boats will float down the Potomac River with a firework show to close the parade. Landside activities include crafts, cookie decorating, live music and more. Visitors will also enjoy seasonal drinks and fare at The Wharf’s one-of-a-kind restaurants as well as be able to shop for great gifts at The Wharf’s only-in-DC shops, and experience the holidays on the waterfront.
