Two New Restaurants Coming to the Lumber Shed in Navy Yard this Spring – Due South and The Navy Yard Oyster Company

The Lumber Shed in Yards Park is getting ready to welcome two new spots. A couple new liquor license placards were posted over the weekend – first for Due South across the street from Krub Thai on the non river side:

“Tavern serving Southern food with a seating capacity of 199 and total occupancy load of 250. Requesting a Summer Garden with an occupancy load of 92 and Entertainment Endorsement to include Cover Charge.”

A heaping helping of southern-style cuisine and hospitality will come to The Yards next spring when Due South, the latest restaurant to be added to the impressively growing dining scene at The Yards, will open in The Lumber Shed, located at 301 Water Street SE, at the edge of the waterfront Yards Park. The announcement was made today by Forest City Washington, master developer of The Yards located in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood.

Due South will occupy a 3,366 SF space at the northwest corner of The Lumber Shed. It joins the already open Agua 301, Osteria Morini, Ice Cream Jubilee as well as the Navy Yard Oyster Company (also opening in spring 2015) in completing the restaurant array in the all-glass, adaptive-reuse building on the riverfront. Like the other restaurants in The Lumber Shed, the table-service Due South will have outdoor seating, as well as wonderful views of the surrounding Yards Park through its dining room’s floor-to-ceiling glass. With the signing of Due South, The Lumber Shed is now fully leased.

The new restaurant is the latest concept from Georgetown Events, a DC-based restaurant/bar/events group headed by Bo Blair. The company has numerous other area restaurants including several Jetties sandwich shops (five locations), Surfside in Glover Park, Bayou and Smith Point in Georgetown and the Something Sweet Bakery in NW DC.

And the new Wine and Oyster Bar that we heard about back in July – The Navy Yard Oyster Company:

“New establishment will be a wine-centric oyster bar offering a seasonal, seafood-driven small plate menu drawing its inspiration from the Chesapeake Bay and the states that Washington, DC is connected to, both geographically and culturally. Entertainment will consist of live music for jazz brunch, and other occasional similar performances. Seating inside premises is 73 and the total occupancy load inside is 199. Two (2) Summer Gardens with seating for 32 and 18 patrons.”

It’s located on the river side in between Agua 301 and Osteria Morini.

“I am just frustrated that there seems to be no communication regarding the need to be a little more vigilant”

“Dear PoPville,

Tuesday around 6:30p in the area of New Jersey, First St. SE and I St. SE, a young, African-American female with a mask attempted to rob two females. I know one of the victims was asked for her phone (she had it out), but she wouldn’t give it up. MPD caught the robber under the 395 overpass (the bridge on New Jersey Ave). I learned of this information as my boyfriend (who also lives nearby) works on New Jersey and watched one of the robberies. He’s also friendly with the local police, who informed him that the woman was captured. I confirmed it on MPD’s twitter feed.

I understand this is a low level crime with a good outcome, but my frustration comes from the fact that we often have robberies or worse. My boyfriend was assaulted outside of the Nats Park entrance around 4pm one Monday afternoon a few months ago, when a group of males decided to try and play “knock-out” (because there was no Nats game that day, so no people in that area (this is outside of the Bullpen, before the Navy Yard metro)). My boyfriend called 911 (the police station is a 1/4 mi away) and after putting him on hold and then asking him repeatedly where he was, they told him to stand on the corner of M and Half St. He waited 20 min and they never came. A local police officer, when he heard of what happened, said that he wasn’t surprised as groups had been trying to play knock out in our area for weeks. We’ve had multiple robberies in the garages of the Bozzuto buildings (909 New Jersey, 100 Capitol Yards, 70 Capitol Yards) – one day (a few months ago) when another robbery occurred, I tried to post on the Community Web Board to alert the residents. Bozzuto reviews every potential post, and they refused to post mine (yet I get multiple emails a day from residents asking me to babysit their dog).

I lived in Eastern Market prior to moving down to Navy Yard, so I’m not surprised that there’s local crime, nor am I saying that the issues in Navy Yard are greater than another area. I am just frustrated that there seems to be no communication regarding the need to be a little more vigilant.”

11th Street Bridge Park Design Winner! OMA + OLIN selected for DC’s first elevated park over the Anacostia River

“At 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, OMA Partner Jason Long and OLIN Partner Hallie Boyce will present their community inspired design concept and vision for the 11th Street Bridge Park. District Department of Transportation Director Matthew Brown and 11th Street Bridge Park Director Scott Kratz will provide opening remarks.

After a seven-month nationwide competition, the OMA + OLIN design was unanimously selected by the competition jury. The design team was asked to transform an aged-out freeway bridge into a one of a kind new civic space over the Anacostia River.

Willie’s Brew & Que officially opening Thursday in Navy Yard

Capitol Riverfront BID reports:

“The barbeque is being tested on the grill, and the big-screen TVs are ready to go! Sports bar-themed barbeque restaurant Willie’s Brew & Que will be opening very soon in the Boilermaker Shops, located at 300 Tingey Street, SE in the Capitol Riverfront.

Willie’s Brew & Que will be open daily from 11:00 am to 2:00 am. Lunch will be served Monday through Friday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, and dinner everyday from 4:00 pm to 2:00 am.

Willie’s features a total of fourteen 70-inch and 60-inch TVs, so customers will be able to view at least three games from any seat in the restaurant.”

Nats will release some Standing Room Only Tickets at the Box Office 9am Tomorrow

“The Washington Nationals will begin their Postseason run when they host Game One of the National League Division Series on Friday, October 3 at 3:07 p.m. at Nationals Park. The game will be televised exclusively on FOX Sports 1.

A limited number of Standing Room Only tickets for this NLDS matchup will go on sale at the Nationals Park Box Office on Friday at 9:00 a.m. Tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis and fans can purchase up to two tickets per customer. Each ticket will be $30 and grandstand seating will not be available for purchase day-of-game during the Postseason. Fans should be sure to check that they bring the correct NLDS ticket to Friday’s game, as anyone with an incorrect ticket will not be admitted into the ballpark.”

A Look Inside Willie’s Brew & Que finally coming soon to Navy Yard

Last week ANC Rep David Garber tweeted that the long awaited Willie’s Brew & Que was finally hiring. Now, these photos were posted to Willie’s facebook page. If the BBQ is any good this could be another a great addition to Navy Yard. They are located at the opposite end of Bluejacket brewery in the Boilermaker building. Stay tuned for an opening date.
