Thanks to a reader for passing on from the Camden apartment building management [60 L Street, NE]:

“We wanted to make you aware of an incident which occurred last night. At approximately 10:30 PM, there was an attempted robbery of a resident and their guest on L Street. According to the police report, three suspects with the estimated age of 13-14 years old pepper sprayed a female on L Street in between our building and the Mathematica building and attempted to steal her purse. The suspects fled without the purse and fortunately, the resident and guest were not injured beyond the pepper spray.

We have the footage of the suspects on camera and have provided this to the police to aid in their investigation. If you have any information, we encourage you to contact the Washington DC Police Department at 202-727-9099.”

The Cookie Wear Boutique in its early beginnings, started in a basement less than 500 feet. That location because of old faulty wiring within building’s infrastructure caught on fire, and destroyed what Michelle Noodles, her family and her collective built. (more…)

“I stopped by the new Neal Place Tap+Garden yesterday and wanted to report that it is now open! They have been apparently open for close to 2 months, and even though I have stopped by there multiple times I did not see many people there so I assumed they were not open.

We walked in yesterday and talked with one of the employees. They have been open for about two months. It is open Thursday through Sunday each week (entirely sure on the hours for those days). Just thought it would be nice to send out another update on the blog to let people, who may not be quite as inquisitive as I was, know that the new beer garden is now open. They had a pretty decent selection of craft beers for a great price (all beers are between $5-7).”

Free Ice Cream at Union Market’s DC Scoop Event Sunday

“Union Market, northeast D.C.’s vibrant retail and culinary district, invites local families, friends and ice cream fans out for the sixth annual DC Scoop event on Sunday, July 17 from 1 to 4pm. The highly-anticipated, free ice cream extravaganza will take place at Dock 5, the indoor space above the Market, where ice cream vendors from 11 different creameries will put their best foot forward to win the coveted “Best Ice Cream” title.

DC Scoop guests will enjoy a wide array of free samples and servings for purchase, including gelato, ice cream sandwiches, popsicles and soda shoppe-style scoops. Frozen treat fanatics at the family-friendly event can also participate in ice cream-eating contests, raffles and giveaways. Timber Pizza Co. will provide savory complements to patrons’ favorite desserts, while Union Market vendor Buffalo & Bergen will join the fun to serve Root Beer Floats to kids.

Nicecream Factory, the 2014 and 2015 DC Scoop winner, pairs liquid nitrogen with fresh local ingredients to create flavors for customers on the spot, a business model developed by owners Gilbert Welsford and Sandra Tran. “We were so excited to be recognized,” says Welsford. “There were so many incredible competitors participating in last year’s DC Scoop event. “Metro is showcasing photographs captured by Kevin Sutherland, the American University graduate student who was tragically killed aboard a Metrorail train on July 4, 2015, at the NoMa-Gallaudet Station starting today.

Sutherland was a talented photographer who enjoyed taking pictures of Washington, D.C. landmarks. He was traveling with his camera to the National Mall to capture Fourth of July fireworks when he became the victim of a horrific crime.

Working through Metro’s Art in Transit program, Sutherland’s family asked to display some of Kevin’s art, and Metro was pleased to provide the venue.”

Plans for Union Market Movie Theater Canceled

Well this is a bummer, Washington Business Journal reports:

“Plans for a new Angelika Film Center above the Union Market building have been canceled, though it is unclear whether Edens, Union Market’s owner, has shelved its proposed expansion entirely.”

Back in November 2013 we learned:

““EDENS, one of the nation’s leading retail real estate owners and developers, announced today that they will partner with Reading International, Inc. to open an Angelika Film Center in EDENS growing Union Market district in 2015.”

The NoMa BID today announced that REI is re-opening their popular REI Community Space at Wunder Garten, NoMa’s pop-up Bavarian bier garten and launching their “United Outside” campaign.  The NoMa BID will also be hosting the ever-popular NoMa Summer Screen, a 4th of July Bash and other exciting events for the entire community.
