From a press release:

On Tuesday, February 5 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m., Lebanon’s first and only craft beer, 961 Beer will make its D.C. debut at ChurchKey (1337 14th Street NW). Founded in 2006 by Mazen Hajjar, the brewery began as an experiment among friends and has grown to produce 300,000 cases annually, including four “Regular” offerings and the first of what promises to be many “Brewmaster’s Select” offerings, their superior Lebanese Pale Ale. Hajjar will be on hand to meet, drink and answer questions with all attendees. Event will be pay-as-you-go.

961 Beer, named after the international dialing code for Lebanon, brands include: Lager, a Helles-style lager that is crisp and flavorful and just won “Best Lager” at the 2012 Hong Kong International Beer Awards; Red Ale, densely malt-y and reddish in color with an intensely fruity and aromatic flavor; Porter, brewed with dark roasted malts and hopped with traditional English varieties; Witbier, an unfiltered beer that is light and sweet with natural sediment; and Lebanese Pale Ale, based loosely on an English IPA with aromas inspired by the spice markets of the Middle East, brewed with 100% traditional Lebanese herbs and spices such as thyme, sumac, chamomile, sage, anise and mint.

961 Beer began as one of the world’s smallest microbreweries when Hajjar invited his friends to join him in brewing great beer in the country they love and call home. From 20-liter kettles on home stoves, the brewery has expanded to meet demand and now proudly brews nearly 300,000 cases annually. Focused on traditional techniques, quality ingredients and a deep love for their product, 961 Beer is one of the fastest-growing and most exciting craft breweries in the world today. The brewery is located in the foothills of Mazraat Yachoua, overlooking Beirut and the Mediterranean Sea.

Thanks to a reader for sending the photo above of the coming soon sign for Bar di Bari. Back in Oct. 2012 we first plans of a new cafe coming to the corner of 14th and R St, NW in the new PN Hoffman building (Northern Exchange.) At that time a liquor license application stated it would be a:

“New European-style restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Inside seating capacity of 32, total Occupancy Load of 97, and Sidewalk Café with 52 seats.”

Interesting to hear there will be a wine bar element as well. Updates as they get closer to opening.

Back in April 2012 we learned that Executive Chef Ari Gejdenson From Acqua Al 2 would be taking over the former HR-57 space at 1610 14th St, NW next to Pearl Dive/Black Jack. I was psyched to see the new front revealed:

Some sweet history too:

While the renovations are turning out to be pretty sweet, I do admit to missing the music:

Congrats to Cork Wine Bar on their upcoming five year anniversary! I still remember the excitement of opening weekend back in Feb. 2008. It’s a serious credit to them that they are still as popular today as they were back then.

From a press release:

It was five years ago that Diane Gross and Khalid Pitts brought their vision of a wine bar that paired Old World wines with share plates of delectable food to life along Logan Circle’s 14th Street Corridor. Beginning January 26, Cork Wine Bar will celebrate its fifth anniversary, with a weekend of special wine flights featuring some of Diane and Khalid’s favorite wines, a new brunch cocktail, and a show of appreciation to the loyal guests who have made their wine bar a favored neighborhood gathering spot.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

Last week we noted work had begun on the new office building coming to the vacant lot between the Great Wall Szechaun House and Posto.

Lots more info on the building from a press release:

Whitman-Walker Health will open a new, modern health care home at 1525 14th St., NW, in mid-2014 to meet the health care needs of our community. This state-of-the-art center will enable Whitman-Walker Health to further our leading role in the fight against HIV/AIDS, expand on our commitment to provide affirming, culturally-competent care to metro DC’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and better serve our neighbors in the 14th Street NW corridor.

“Whitman-Walker has nearly doubled our patient base over the past six years and we expect growth to continue as more residents access care through the new health reform law,” said Don Blanchon. “This new facility will enable WWH to meet the health care needs of our community and provide the highest quality care in a 21st Century health care home.”

When the move is complete, Whitman-Walker will have nearly 43,000 square feet of space for health care services, a larger pharmacy, a Travel Medicine clinic, Wellness programs and complementary therapies such as acupuncture. The plan is built around Whitman-Walker’s three core values: Community, Caring and Quality.

A very reliable source sends some news about one of DC’s most well known salons – Immortal Beloved. Word is that Immortal Beloved is likely going to move from their current 1457 Church St, NW location to the nearby current location of the Muleh furniture store at 1831 14th Street, NW. They also say that Muleh will likely be moving into a new space in Georgetown. Not sure of the planned timing of this move but both Muleh and Immortal Beloved remain open. More info as it becomes available.
