Thanks to a reader for sending a photo of the new Chipotle signage on 14th Street just north of P (the old Sam’s Pawn Shop building.) This is the same building where a Zengo Cycling Studio is coming this December. From a press release:

“Zengo Cycle, an indoor cycling concept based in Bethesda, Md., is expanding in the D.C. metro area with a new 1,900 square foot studio in the Logan Circle neighborhood. Opening in December, this location marks the beginning of the concept’s regional expansion.

Located at 1508 14th Street NW, the new Zengo Cycle will be the neighborhood’s first indoor cycling studio. The location will feature a fleet of top-of-the-line Schwinn magnetic resistance bikes, a custom sound system that makes music an integral part of the experience, and a robust retail section offering an array of Zengo Cycle branded gear.”

Yesterday we wondered about Bar di Bari’s abrupt closure in Logan Circle. Owner/Partner Aaron Gordon updates:

“Bari is not closed, but we are exploring the option of a Winter schedule that includes opening Tues-Sunday. Obviously, as a patio-driven café, the colder weather certainly limits our potential business, especially on Mondays.

Thanks to all the folks that left positive comments. Sorry, we didn’t leave a specific sign in the window or on our Facebook site to explain being closed today. After seeing these comments, I guess well have to do something about our light fixture!”

We previously have heard that another restaurant from the owners of Taylor Gourmet (though not necessarily a Taylor Gourmet Deli) would be coming to the former Mid City Deli space at the corner of 14th and P St, NW. A permit had been applied for under the name Taylor Gourmet. We learned this back in Dec. 2012. Now a very good source tells me that he hears a Dolcezza Gelato and coffee shop could actually be taking over the space instead. I’m trying to get confirmation from Dolcezza and will update when I hear back from them.

Bar di Bari opened up in Logan Circle back in June. Anyone know what’s going on? Have they pulled a Diego or closed for good? One reader writes:

“Do you know if Bar di Bari closed? It’s closed today with no signs saying why. doors are locked. chairs up. could be nothing. but I’m pretty sure they’re open everyday of week.”

Someone on their Facebook page, which hasn’t been updated since September 26th, also writes:

“What’s up with being closed today? I went for my power hour coffee and everything was locked up”

Phone calls to the cafe go straight to voicemail without identifying the number with any restaurant. Their website still says:

“opening some time in June… your guess is as good as ours!”

Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

ARCHIE RESTING THE DAY AFTER HE GOT HOME, WITH HIS GOOD SIDE UP

“Sorry for the delay in posting this, but I wanted to give everyone an update on Archie (aka Scrappy).

He is doing well under the circumstances. The hospital released him late Tuesday evening, and we have pretty much taken the week off and stayed home to monitor him. Miraculously he had no catastrophic injuries. His lungs, heart, spine etc were unharmed. He has a very large gash on one leg that cannot be sutured, so we’ve been taking him to the vet every day to have the dressings changed. He had a nicked spleen which caused some internal bleeding but the vet decided to let it heal on its own.

We remain concerned about some high liver test numbers which we hoped would have gone down by now, but so far our vet is not too alarmed. There seems to be some cartilage damage on the one leg, which we won’t know for awhile whether he has any permanent mobility issues. He is walking though, and I even took him for a stroll around the block this morning. (We went past 14/S, I guess sort of a get back on the horse concept!)

Other than that, he had some pretty horrific road burn, which has already begin to heal. The first few days he was lethargic, but the last few days his spirit has slowly been returning. We cannot express how enormously grateful we are to have him.

The final vet bill at Friendship Animal Hospital was significantly less than the estimate, and I noticed later at home that they removed several charges from the estimate so it seems they definitely cut us a break. He got absolutely fantastic care there, and we are very appreciative of their efforts. (more…)

Though you might not recognize his name you will surely recognize his work. Robert Cole’s studio was located in Logan Circle and you could often spot his pieces when walking up 15th Street. An obituary notice says he passed Oct. 15th. You can read about his work here. Rest in Peace.

Archie

“Dear PoPville,

At about 8:30 this morning I was crossing 14th at S Street with my two dogs, when a woman driving a very large older model Buick made a right turn on red from S and struck me in the crosswalk. One of my dogs was caught under her tire and dragged down 14th about 30/50 feet. I waved, screamed and banged on the car for her to stop, as the dog was still leashed and I was running alongside with my other dog in tow. She finally stopped and at that point he was trapped under the tire of her car. I am yelling for her to back up to free him. Finally she backed up and miraculously my dog jumped up, pulled from his collar and ran back down S street.

In the commotion I decided to run after my dog. As I was running the other direction the woman in the car started to drive off. A man on 14th had the good sense to stop the car, and at that point the driver did wait at the corner.

There were at least three other witnesses; two women and one man. It turns out my dog ran back to my house a block away and was sitting on the stoop bleeding and shaking. As I turned around, the two women had followed me to help. I decided to put him in the car and head for the vet hospital.

Upon passing the corner all four witnesses and the driver were there; one gentleman flagged me over, and I was able to get the drivers contact info.

However I was anxious to get my dog to the hospital and left without getting any other information. I have made a police report, but after calling the driver’s insurance company I am now concerned that I might need witnesses to attest to the fact I was legally in the crosswalk.

If you were there this morning or otherwise witnessed what happened PLEASE get in touch – Jdf65dc(at)aol(dot)com.

My dog is at Friendship Animal Hospital now and while it appears for the moment his injuries are not life threatening, he has severe gashes on his legs, and internal bleeding that is possibly from a tear in his spleen. It is still unclear whether he might have other internal injuries. He will be hospitalized for at least two days and may require more surgery.

As you can imagine we are distraught, but thankful he is alive and getting good vet care. Upon leaving the hospital this morning, I was presented with an estimate for charges totaling almost $5,000. And that is just for today and tomorrow; not including potential surgery and follow up care. The hospital is requiring an immediate deposit of $3,000 to continue treatment. Unfortunately, I don’t have the funds and am currently scrambling to line up some sort of temporary loan or credit line to cover the charges.

So my best bet at this point is to have firm witness accounts documented in the police report so the driver’s insurance company might be compelled to cover the costs.”
