Props to the Cops – Arrests Made in 1991 Triple Homicide

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch announced the arrest of two suspects who were wanted in connection with a triple homicide that occurred in the 1800 block of Franklin Street, Northeast on Tuesday, April 23, 1991.

At approximately 10:12 am, Fifth District Officers responded to a call for an unconscious person. Upon arrival, they located two adult males and an adult female; all were unconscious and suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Service personnel responded to the scene and found no signs consistent with life.

On Tuesday, February 16, 2016, pursuant to DC Superior Court Arrest Warrants, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force arrested 44-year-old Michael Green of Northeast, D.C. and 45-year-old Benito Valdez, of Arlington, Virginia. They are both charged with First Degree Murder While Armed in the shooting deaths of 29-year-old Curtis Pixley, of Northeast, D.C., 24-year-old Keith Simmons, of Fort Washington, MD, and 23-year-old Samantha Gillard, of Southeast, D.C.”

“On Thursday night Mayor Bowser hosted a community meeting at New Cannon Baptist Church in Ward 5 to discuss her plan to end homelessness in all 8 wards. The community was told that the city intends to build a homeless shelter at 2622 25th Place NE in the neighborhood of Langdon. Many residents attended the event and expressed their strong opposition to the proposed location, citing concerns for both for the homeless families and the additional impact on the community which has numerous homeless shelters already.

“Another new bar/restaurant for Rhode Island Ave. They don’t have food yet but they’re open for beer and cocktails. They have a few house brewed drafts that were pretty good. They’re also doing a no tipping policy and choosing to pay a fair wage to wait staff.”

Triple Shooting (one victim killed) in the 3000 block of 25th St, NE

“The Fifth District is currently investigating a triple shooting that occurred at approximately 11:40 p.m. in the 3000 block of 25th N.E. One victim sustained a gunshot wound to the shoulder, second victim sustained a gunshot wound to the torso and third victim sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body. The suspects were described as black males, wearing dark pants and a dark shirts.

Anyone who has information regarding this case should call police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, information may be submitted to the TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.”

Update:

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide which occurred in the 3000 block of 25th Street, Northeast on Friday, September 4, 2015, at approximately 11:35 pm.

Members of the Fifth District responded for the report of a shooting and upon arrival, they located two adult males suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services transported the victims to area hospitals. A third victim was transported to a local hospital in a privately owned vehicle. Two of the victims were admitted with serious injuries and one adult male succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The decedent has been identified as 22 year-old Davon Wade, of Northeast, D.C.”

“Chuck Brown Day is coming and it’s going to be GREAT!

Since Wednesday there has been a lot of buzz about Chuck Brown Day, scheduled for Saturday, August 22 at Chuck Brown Memorial Park. It seems to have begun with a Facebook event for the concert which had approximately 3000 RSVPs as of last week. While there are legitimate concerns about planning for an event of this size, it is important to understand that these RSVPs are not solid confirmations and in our social media-driven world, that number is nearly meaningless.

That said, there are legitimate concerns regarding crowd control, transportation, public safety, general noise and clean-up. I have been talking to many officials from DC Government since late Wednesday and I have concluded that the District of Columbia government is prepared to handle Chuck Brown Day. This will be a popular event, but I believe August 22 will be a fun day for our neighborhood and for DC. I can offer more detail about the plan in the section below. But know that I support this event and am very confident it will go smoothly.

I also want to be sure to note that when this idea was first raised at an SMD meeting at Langdon Rec Center several months ago, there was unanimous support at the meeting for this event and I believe the community continues to generally support Chuck Brown Day. I continue to support Chuck Brown Day at Chuck Brown Memorial Park on August 22, 2015.

“My neighbors are straight-up livid at the idea of 3k people coming to the hood, but I think it’s pretty cool, and a good chance for people to familiarize themselves with our part of town. Hopefully they don’t succeed in getting the event moved or canceled. I assume parking will be rough if that many people actually attend, though, so people should probably take transit if at all possible.”

I rent a studio at Off The Beaten Tracks Warehouse, a new art space in Langdon Park, just down by the railroad. The former train depot, post office, and warehouse has been renovated into an amazing space with painters, photographers, fashion, letter press, florists, metal workers, furniture makers, jewelers, a kosher wine distributor, and an enormous SLAMMIN’ antique store, the likes of which hasn’t been seen in DC in decades. They’ve even built an incredible roof deck and they (we) are hosting an open house on May 10, from noon-4pm.”
