George Washington University’s website says:

“GW’s new, state-of-the-art Science and Engineering Hall will be a research and teaching hub in the heart of Washington aimed at fostering collaborations across disciplines and a dynamic, hands-on learning environment.

The nearly 500,000-square-foot, 14-story complex — with eight floors above ground and six below, including four for parking — is expected to open its doors in early 2015, just blocks from the White House, World Bank and State Department, and in close proximity to a host of other federal agencies and research centers.

The building will nearly double the space on GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus available to several scientific disciplines, including teaching spaces designed for a more hands-on approach to learning and highly specialized core lab facilities, such as a three-story high bay, a nanofabrication suite and a greenhouse.”

MPD Seeks Suspects in First Degree Sexual Abuse: 2400 Block of I St, NW on Sat. Nov. 22

“The Metropolitan Police Department is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating three suspects in connection with a first degree sexual abuse offense.

On Saturday, November 22, 2014, at approximately 12:30 am, in the 2400 block of I Street, NW, an adult female victim was walking in an alley when three suspects approached the victim and sexually assaulted her. The suspects then fled the location. The three suspects are described below:

Suspect One is described as a white male in his 20s, approximately 6’3” in height with a medium build, light brown hair that is puffy up top and closer on the sides, and was last seen wearing a dark colored short sleeve shirt with the word “Fitch” in large white letters similar to the one pictured below.

Suspect Two is described as a white male in his 20s, shorter than suspect one, with a medium build, and was last seen wearing a dark colored V-neck short sleeve shirt and a black Nike Fuel Band on his right wrist similar to the one pictured below.

Suspect Three is described as a white male in his 20s.

Anyone who has information regarding this case should call police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, information may be submitted to the TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.”

Council Members Parking Badly Vol. 77: “It was like some sort of caricature of a political fat cat”

“I want to apologize for parking in a fire hydrant zone on Thursday evening. To be honest, I didn’t realize there was a fire hydrant. That is, of course, no excuse, and I now fully recognize that was not a legal parking spot.”

My husband and I were having dinner with friends at West End Bistro when we noticed a back car doing a pretty sloppy job of parallel parking, bumping the other two cars enough to draw our attention. To make it even more entertaining, the driver was attempting to park right in front of a fire hydrant. Then we noticed the license plate said DC Council! We assumed the driver/apparent councilperson hadn’t seen the hydrant, and would realize their error as soon as they opened the car door. Nope.

Jack Evans stepped out in a tux, looked straight at the fire hydrant, put a cigar in his mouth, and walked toward the entrance of the Ritz. It was like some sort of caricature of a political fat cat. We left maybe 45 minutes later and he hadn’t returned, so it wasn’t as if he ran a quick errand.

In front of a hydrant?! Really??”

Ed. Note: We’ve previously learned that Council Members are not obligated to follow parking regulations however, I’m not sure if that applies to fire hydrants given the safety risk.

Arrest Made in Assault with the Intent to Commit First Degree Sexual Abuse Near Foggy Bottom Metro

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sexual Assault Unit have announced a suspect has been arrested in connection with an Assault with the Intent to Commit First Degree Sexual Abuse and a Sexual Abuse Allegation.

On Sunday, October 19, 2014 at approximately 3:30 am, an adult female was in the area of the 2400 block of I Street NW when a male suspect approached her, grabbed her and attempted to pull her into nearby bushes while threatening her. The victim was able to flee. A short time later, the suspect attempted to sexually assault a second adult female in the area.

The suspect 46-year-old Mustapha Kone of no fixed address was arrested on the scene and charged with Assault with the Intent to Commit First Degree Sexual Abuse, Felony Threats, Kidnapping and Simple Assault.”

Jose Andres’ fast-casual vegetable-themed restaurant, Beefsteak, coming to Foggy Bottom

Wanted to write in that Jose Andres has announced that he’s opening a fast-casual vegetable-themed restaurant called Beefsteak. It will be going into the new building in Foggy Bottom on 22 and I across from the Whole Foods. It’s due to open January of 2015.”

Washington Post got the scoop:

“Early next year, Andrés will join the constellation of famous chefs across the country who are launching fast-casual restaurants. Well aware of the landscape of fast-casuals around him in Washington, he’s staking out terrain that can be his alone: He will open a fast-food eatery that is vegetable-focused. And then, if all goes well, perhaps he will open a hundred more.”

Robbery Gun 6:15pm Last Night at the corner of 25th St and K St, NW

“At approximately 6:15 PM today [Monday], a complainant reports being approached by a male subject at the corner of 25th St and K St NW. The male suspect presented a black handgun and demanded property from the complainant. The lookout for the suspect is as follows:

Black male, approximately mid-20’s, approximately 5’10” in height, dark complexion, wearing a dark gray hoodie with a black T-shirt underneath, dark color jeans, and with a goatee facial hair style. The suspect was armed with a dark color handgun.

GW Safety Alert: Report of Attempted Sexual Assault by Taxi Driver

A reader passes on the following GW safety alert issued at 12:49am:

“Subject: GW Safety and Security Alert

Incident: Report of Sexual Assault – a female hailed a cab in Georgetown for a ride back to Foggy Bottom. She stated the driver pulled over in front of Tompkins Hall and attempted to have sex with her in the back seat. She was able to get out of the van and ran to a pedestrian who activated a blue light to notify campus police. The cab was described as a silver van with windows, last scene headed north bound on 23rd in the area of H St. NW

Suspect Description: Black male, in his 40s’ he was heavy set.

Location: Area of 23rd and H St. NW

Action: Report anyone driving a cab matching this description to GWPD or MPD. Call 202-994-6111 or 911

Status: The suspect has not been apprehended. Officers are searching the area at this time.”
