Things That Make My Head Explode – “Parents occasionally send their children to buy groceries at this store and they don’t want to expose them to an environment where alcohol is being sold”

A liquor license placard has been posted at the 17th Street Safeway in Dupont:

“New Class “B” full-service grocery store selling beer and wine.”

And this email from an ANC Commissioner on the Dupont listserv has been causing me incredible agita. Please join me in this discomfort:

“Safeway is undergoing a badly needed renovation and has applied to the DC government for a permit to sell beer and wine. I have been talking to neighbors and many oppose the sale of beer and wine at Safeway.

The main concern is that the store is small and beer and wine will take space otherwise available for groceries. They have found 80 linear feet for beer and wine.

Neighbors want to preserve the 17th St. village and are supportive of the family businesses who run local liquor outlets. We already have plenty of options for beer and wine.

Parents occasionally send their children to buy groceries at this store and they don’t want to expose them to an environment where alcohol is being sold.

The ANC meets next Wednesday [Ed. Note: tomorrow] to consider this issue. (7 pm, 1775 Mass. Ave.) It can support or oppose Safeway’s proposal and its views must be given ‘great weight’ by ABRA. They also have a leading role in negotiating any settlement agreement with Safeway so it’s important that they hear residents’ views. A big turnout at the Wednesday meeting would be great.”

17th Street About to Get way more Colorful

“Councilmember Grosso in April sent a letter to the District Department of Transportation supporting the idea of painting crosswalks on 17th Street, NW rainbow to commemorate the important place of the LGBTQ community in the District of Columbia and to further celebrate D.C.’s welcoming and inclusive values. The idea originated with ANC Commissioner Randy Downs (2B05).

Yesterday, Councilmember Grosso received a response from DDOT.  Although the painting cannot be made permanent, he is excited to hear that temporary rainbow crosswalks will be painted in time for the Capital Pride Parade. (more…)

“On Saturday, June 10, 2017, the following closure will be in effect for the 2017 Capital Pride Block Party.

The following street will be closed from 12:00 pm until 12:00 am.

15th Street, NW from P Street, NW to Church Street, NW

On Saturday, June 10, 2017, the Capital Pride Alliance will be hosting The Capital Pride Parade in the District of Columbia. In conjunction with this event, there will be several street closures that motorists should take into consideration:

“Any updates from WMATA about the status of Dupont AC?”

“Dear PoPville,

Have you heard any updates from WMATA about the status of Dupont AC? It’s clearly still not working and it’s now been three years since I thought they said it would be fixed. I’m sure lots of people would love an update about whatever the heck they’re supposed to be doing.”

A couple weeks ago WAMU reported:

“Farragut North and Dupont Circle have been without reliable air conditioning for quite a while, and there’s no date certain for even temporary repairs, WMATA General Manager Paul Wiedefeld told reporters on Monday. As for a permanent solution, that could take years.

“For this summer what we’re looking to do is a temporary fix, which is to put a portable cooling tower,” said Wiedefeld, who would not commit to a date to having it in place. “We’re pushing as hard as we can. I’d love to get it in June. Let’s see what we can get to.”

From WMATA:

“Update May 4, 2017

Farragut North and Dupont Circle stations currently have no cooling capacity due to the failure of 40-year-old water lines that run under Connecticut Avenue NW and connect the stations’ off-site chiller plant (located 40 feet below the median of Connecticut Ave) to a cooling tower located on the roof of a nearby building.

Since 2015, Metro and its contractors have made multiple attempts to repair the pipes, including identifying and patching individual leaks, followed by a complete relining of the pipes from within. Unfortunately, none of the repair strategies applied to date has been successful.

Currently, an independent engineering firm is reviewing the situation to determine the best course of action on a permanent fix, which may involve excavation of Connecticut Avenue NW to allow for complete replacement of the pipes. While that effort is underway, Metro is working cooperatively with the District of Columbia, Golden Triangle BID, and other stakeholders to install temporary cooling equipment while this complicated permanent fix is advanced.

Based on current project timelines, the temporary cooling capacity could be in place as early as June. We should note that, because these cooling lines run under Connecticut Avenue NW, the project may have an impact on motorists. The independent engineering review will identify solutions and strategies that minimize this impact to the extent possible, and we will continue to work with DDOT, Golden Triangle BID, and other stakeholders throughout the project.

“Will this meshwork keep the rats from burrowing?”

“Around Dupont Circle today. Azaleas, hydrangeas, & some other kind of bushes. First I thought: new homes for the rats. Then I saw they were putting wire mesh first & then making holes in the mesh to put the plants through before covering the mesh with some soil. Will this meshwork keep the rats from burrowing? Won’t the rats just dig under at the edges?”

Donburi applies for liquor license at former Sophie’s space on 19th

Back in January I first shared word that the Donburi folks were moving into the former Sophie’s Cuban Cuisine space. Anyone remember Singapore Bistro? That news is now confirmed based on a liquor license application for Donburi:

“A fast casual restaurant serving Japanese cuisine. Seating capacity of 57 inside. Total Occupancy Load of 92. No entertainment, performances or dancing.”

Donburi’s first location is at 2438 18th Street, NW in Adams Morgan.  Sophie’s closed back in March of last year. You can see Donburi’s menu here.  Updates as they get closer to opening.
