awning

Holy moly. Thanks to Dan for sending the shot above: “an awning blew off a roof somewhere, landed here on 20TH and O ST NW. Debris everywhere, hit the white SUV across the street. Looks like it smashed the windows of the vacant Ping Pong Dim Sum as well.”

Jonathan Padget snaps the photo below and writes: “Apparently Bristol House lost a rooftop structure. Old Ping Pong Dim Sum damaged, along with vehicle nearby.”

@PoPville on twitter was lit up with reports of road closures this morning. Nevermindtheend sends these photos and writes: “I’ve never seen them block so many streets for the Prayer Breakfast before – Columbia Road was blocked from Connecticut Avenue up to Wyoming Avenue.”

From a press release:

“DGS Delicatessen and Colony Club are joining forces to bring DuPont Circle top-notch coffee and bagels. Sadie’s will operate out of the DGS sandwich counter from 7am-11am, Monday-Friday, so you can grab a latte and breakfast before DGS opens its doors for lunch.

Sadie’s Weekdays, a collaboration between cousins and friends, is a nod to the classic New York bagel shop, with an emphasis on quality ingredients and preparation. Expect to see a bagel with soft scrambled egg, cheddar cheese, and crispy DGS pastrami. The bagels are coming from DC’s own Bullfrog Bagels. Colony Club’s baristas will be behind the counter, brewing Ceremony Coffee (Annapolis, MD) and pulling shots of Tandem Coffee (Portland, ME).

The Sadie’s team is looking forward to improving your mornings in a big way starting Monday, January 30th.”

One of my favorite sculptures (Andrei Sakharov sculpted by P. Shapiro) in DC that I often use to illustrate frustrating posts. I’ve never seen anything like this button:

The 1700 block of Willard St NW is a relatively quiet one block long one way enclave at the very tippy top of Dupont and at the bottom of the hill from Adams Morgan. It features a mix of Victorian houses, as well as small and mid-sized condo and rental buildings. (more…)
