From the Mayor’s Office:

“On Tuesday, October 30, at 7:00 p.m., Mayor Muriel Bowser will serve as the Grand Marshall at the 32nd Annual 17th Street High Heel Race. What began in 1986 as a much smaller event is now one of the District’s most unique and exciting neighborhood celebrations. Today, the High Heel Race draws thousands of residents and visitors to the Dupont Circle Neighborhood to cheer on hundreds of costumed drag queens and race participants as they race down the historic 17th Street, NW.

This year, the Bowser Administration, led by the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs, collaborated with previous organizers, District agencies, and the LGBTQ community to coordinate and lead planning for the Annual 17th Street High Heel Race. Celebrations start at 5:00 p.m., the parade begins at 7:00 p.m., and the race, which generally lasts fewer than 10 minutes, begins at 9:00 p.m.

From WMATA:

“Metro announced that work to install new pipes under Connecticut Ave NW to provide chilled air service to the Dupont Circle and Farragut North Metrorail stations will begin November 5 and continue through late March (approximately 20 weeks). The work is necessary to reestablish a connection between a remote cooling tower, located atop an office building on Connecticut Avenue, with the two stations.

All of Metro’s underground stations are cooled by systems that move cold water to air handling units. As the water passes through the air handling cooling coils, chilled air is produced for the stations.

The original pipes under Connecticut Ave NW were damaged or have deteriorated to a point where they are no longer functional. (more…)

2029 P Street, NW

Ah this is magnificent. Last week a reader noted the new paint job at old Kabob House spot (and the original Pizzeria Paradiso location) on P Street. ChiKo here we come:

Over the summer the Washington Business Journal reported:

“ChiKo, the super-popular Chinese and Korean restaurant that opened about a year ago on Barracks Row, is coming to Dupont Circle.

The restaurant aims to open by the end of the year.”

STAY TUNED.

Ed. Note: Don’t sleep on Obelisk next door either, I still love that place!

From an email:

“There will be a candlelight vigil in Dupont Circle, Thursday evening October 25th from 7pm to 745pm, in advance of Friday’s interment of Matthew Shepard’s ashes in the National Cathedral. For twenty years, his ashes have not been laid to rest, as his parents worried that if they chose a final resting place, it would be at risk of desecration. But, on Friday, this tragic odyssey will come to an end, as there will be a final home for Matthew in a place his parents say he would love.

And so we will gather Thursday evening at 7pm at the fountain in Dupont Circle as a community to mark this occasion and stand against intolerance, hatred, and the violence that claimed Matthew’s life and continues today. (more…)
