There had been a lot of chatter on social media but now Cobalt confirms their closure on 17th Street:

“It’s no secret that the building that housed Cobalt (1639 R St NW) and the adjacent property recently sold.

With the combination of the sale of the buildings, the start of demolition, costly infrastructure repairs and upgrades that we would need to shoulder to remain open for the short remainder of our lease (without an opportunity to extend the lease) along with a slow decline in sales we decided it was the right time to close the business to focus on our other businesses and some personal family needs. After 2 month renovation, Nando’s Dupont Circle Location Reopens Wednesday (Free Chicken March 7th)

“After an extensive two-month renovation, Nando’s PERi-PERi will fire up its grills again near Dupont Circle (1210 18th Street, NW) starting Wednesday, February 20th, at 11am.

After 10 years of operation in a stately, historic building, the 18th Street Nando’s was ready for a major revamp. Today, the restaurant features a new kitchen, draft beer taps and beautifully re-designed dining areas. The customer take-out experience has been vastly improved, with a grab-and-go beverage refrigerator and a convenient order pick-up area near the host stand. (more…)

Whoops, missed this one! Thanks to Moira for letting us know about The Sheppard closing in Dupont.

Fortunately Eater reports:

“The Sheppard doesn’t have a new home locked down yet, but the team is circling in on a handful of sites in the West End, Truxton Circle, and Shaw for the new location. Strauss says he hopes to open the Sheppard 2.0 in six months.”

Lazy Kate’s Bistro coming to 23rd and N Street, NW

“New bistro preparing and serving modern American-style food. Summer Garden with 109 seats. Total Occupancy Load is 209 with seating for 100 inside premises. **The licensee is also requesting an Entertainment Endorsement to provide live entertainment indoors only.”
