Last week I posted From 100% Canadian Chicken* to 100% Plant-Based about a Fruitive coming to the former Chickery space in Dupont Circle. But our tipster was a couple of storefronts off!! The Fruitive is coming two storefronts north closer to the circle on the same side of the street – can’t remember who had that spot – you guys? Anyway, silver lining is that I learned WHO IS taking over the old Chickery space – a HipCityVeg. So big score for plant-based eaters living/working in Dupont.

HipCityVeg openedtheir first D.C. location in Chinatown back in 2016. Any fans? You can check out their menu here.
Updates as both get closer to opening.

“Dear PoPville,
Glenn’s Market on 20th Street was recently the target of a “visit” (a.k.a. undercover set up, a.k.a. sting) by ABRA investigators. A 17-year-old bought an alcoholic beverage to-go (they sell beer, wine, cider, etc. — lots of it locally sourced) and the cashier forgot to ask for his license/birthday.
The person in line right behind the 17-year-old was the ABRA enforcer. Glenn’s was fined $4,000 (!!!!) and forced to close their to-go sections until Sunday. You can still buy a beverage if you’re eating in, but nothing to-go.
Ed. Note: Holiday Hours are
12/26 – 12/28: 12pm – 8pm
12/29 – 12/30: 9am – 9pm
New Year’s Eve: 8am – 9pm
New Year’s Day: 12pm – 8pm
This is a REAL hit for a small merchant.
Yes, the cashier made a mistake and it’s an important regulation to honor for lots of reasons. As the sign says, they did the crime and they’re doing their time.
But the grocery store business is really tough and they make it on VERY small margins. (more…)

The Chickery (previously home to Black and Orange/Rogue States burger spot) closed back in February. Thanks to Eric for sending an update on who’s taking over the space – Fruitive. You can see their menu here. Anyone ever check out their CityCenter location? Stand by for a Dupont opening date.
*I have no idea where The Chickery’s chickens came from but the company is from Toronto and when the opportunity for alliteration comes my way, I strike.

Thanks to Danny for sending. And the video is even better:
@PoPville do you have any insights about this wonderful holiday herald I saw on New Hampshire? pic.twitter.com/mFbPk9W01P

Should you spot a quiet act of heroism biking or not please send an email with a brief description and the neighborhood where it was witnessed to [email protected].

What does it all mean? Let me tell you what it all means. Nothing. It means nothing. In the wise words of Gorgias:
“Nothing exists; Even if something exists, nothing can be known about it; and Even if something can be known about it, knowledge about it can’t be communicated to others. Even if it can be communicated, it cannot be understood.”

“Starbucks Dupont south is closing on December 30th.”
What the hell – first one of the many Comfort One closes and now one of the many Starbucks is closing. Dark days in Dupont indeed.
Now hold on just a second – a liquor license application has just been applied for a Tokyo Pearl at 1301 Connecticut Avenue, NW: (more…)

“PoPville Peeps,
My Fellow Charlie’s Place volunteers and I were overwhelmed with the donations we received from the PoPville community for our Thanksgiving dinner last month. In fact, the donations allowed us to cover not only that Thanksgiving meal, but also our upcoming Christmas dinner on Dec. 20. That’s why we’re not asking for dinner donations this time, we just want you to sit down and eat with us. Come out to see Charlie’s Place, and have a delicious meal with the rest of your DC community.
Charlie’s Place provides meals and counseling to our homeless DC neighbors in Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan and beyond. For our Christmas meal this year we’ve decided to expand the guest list to not just our homeless DC neighbors, but also our Charlie’s Place staff and other Charlie’s Place DC neighbors like you.
The dinner is this Thursday, Dec. 20 at 6 p.m. Please RSVP here so we know how many to expect. Charlie’s Place is located at 1820 Connecticut Ave. NW.
I know what you’re thinking: (more…)

There was a time when the sun never set on a Comfort One Shoes in Dupont Circle.
Thanks to Jonathan Padget for sharing: “next to a shuttered Lou Lou, but the psychic perseveres!”
Ed. Note: This is the old Lambda Rising bookstore space. The closed Lou Lou clothing space next door is the former former Melody Record Store space.
Updates when we learn who takes over both spaces.

“Dear PoPville,
Most DC residents have become all too familiar with the “holiday house” located on 16th Street NW. For the last decade+ the owners of the home have delighted the NW corridor with elaborate holiday decor covering nearly every square inch of their front yard. (more…)
