We first heard about Catch 15 Restaurant and Oyster Bar back in Sept. 2012. About a year ago we heard about the “Occasional Flamingo Dancers”. But it’s now looking like the opening is imminent. If the buildout matches the rendering there will be a great huge bar:

Their website says:
“Sit at our ice bar, in the window or inside for fresh oysters & clams, try an amazing variety of small plates, sandwiches and entrees inspired by the international vibe of all that DC has to offer–intriguing and indulgent casually-sophisticated dining in the heart of DC’s K Street corridor.
Indulge in seductive flavors, relive classics and savor sophisticated pairings with signature creations.
Enjoy dining al fresco or relaxing indoors for Brunch, Lunch, Happy Hour, Dinner or Late Night socializing–simply irresistible!
HOURS OF OPERATION
Mon-Thurs: 11am to 2am
Fri-Sat: 11am to 3am”
The Grand Opening party promises complimentary hors d’oeuvres, champagne, wine and beer. You can sign up for it here.

Filene’s went out of business back in the of 2011. The Marshalls opening up in the former space is having a grand opening on Wed. October 30, 2013 from 8am to 10pm.

From a press release:
“Owner Frank Falesto is pleased to announce the late-November opening of City Tap House DC, the 180-seat craft beer centric, American pub located adjacent to the new City Center at 901 9th Street, NW, Washington, DC, 20001. City Tap House will serve lunch, dinner and weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday.
“Washington DC was an obvious choice for our concept,” says Jonathan Ball, Regional Director for Public House Investments, a management company that oversees multiple restaurant concepts throughout the US including City Tap House. “There is a lot of positive development in the city at the moment, which reminded us of the eclectic vibrancy when we launched the original City Tap House in 2009, centered in the University City neighborhood of Philadelphia.”
City Tap House recognizes DC’s enthusiasm surrounding the craft beer and microbrew scene making it an excellent choice for showcasing the restaurant’s extensive collection of local, national, international and seasonal special edition beers. “Our beer program is truly at the core of what City Tap House represents,” says Ball. “Not only does our beer influence our food but it’s the foundation for unique and engaging guest events. What excites us about opening City Tap House in DC is the ability to pair our beer line up with an elevated pub menu served in a rustic, inviting space that appeals to casuals and professionals alike.” (more…)

This is the space formerly home to Asian Bistro – “Authentic Asian Cousin”:

Yesterday we checked out The apartments at CityCenter and learned that a Tumi store was the first confirmed retailer. In the comments some interesting news came out – specifically a UNIQLO is coming according to this job listing:
“UNIQLO Manager Candidate Program – Retail Sales – new
Company: UNIQLO
Location: Washington, DC
Date Posted: October 21, 2013
UNIQLO is seeking Experienced Store Manager Candidates! At UNIQLO we are seeking individuals who are committed to becoming business leaders in the retail industry. Our ambition is to open 10 – 20 stores annually in the United States and become the #1 Specialty Apparel Retailer. With over 1,200 stores globally, together we believe we can change the world!”
Yes!!!
But in less exciting scuttlebutt is word that the Apple deal may have fallen through. A commenter hears a Gucci store could be taking that space. I haven’t heard that but another source also tells me that he hears Apple has walked. Hopefully they can resurrect that deal because I think an Apple store would do very well there. More info when/if it becomes available.

Yesterday I noticed that an Aveda Salon would be replacing the former Kid’s Closet at 1226 Connecticut Ave, NW. Later I received the following email:
“Dear PoPville,
A recent WaPo article attests to what we see every day: a baby boom in the city. What I haven’t seen is an accompanying boom in stores serving these parents – baby boutiques, clothing stores, etc. I’m (very) happy that I have low cost options like Target and Children’s Place around the corner in Columbia Heights, but when I google “baby gifts” for DC, I get very, very little. I wanted to buy a nice gift for a friend recently, and there were literally no options nearby in 14th/U/AdMo/CoHi/Petworth. I smell a business opportunity…do you think so?”

9th and New York Avenue, NW
Yesterday I was able to take an early look and hard hat tour of The Apartments at CityCenter. They are expensive but they are awesome. In the photo above (on 9th street looking southwest) there are 6 total buildings – to the left are the condos, to the right are the offices and in the center are the apartments (458 units in both buildings.) If all goes according to plan folks should be able to move in starting in early December. In November the new sections of 10th Street and I Street will be reopened to the public.
We are still waiting to learn about most retail and restaurants (“it’s going to be a shopping destination and you can live on top of it”) who have leased space – Tumi was announced as the first retailer today. Tumi will be located at 1051 H Street, NW. I also learned that there are plans for a small grocery store/food market in one of the spaces. More info on retail and restaurants as it gets released. In the meantime check out how the space is starting to turn out:
